ANeSU board commissions facilities study for Mount Abe

BRISTOL — The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union has commissioned a facility and educational needs study for Mount Abraham Union High School.

“There are no current issues with the structure,” said Arden Harwood, the facilities director at Mount Abe. “But for the first time, probably ever, we’re trying to be more proactive with the repair cycle.”

Bristol grandstand gets a facelift

BRISTOL — The Bristol Recreation Club is wrapping up a much-needed renovation project to its grandstand and kitchen facility just in time for the Little League baseball season.

“We thought it was going to be a minor repair project to start with,” said Eric Carter, co-director of the Rec Club. “But when we tore off the siding, we realized that five big posts that hold up the building — two of them had about two feet rotting.”

About 30 years of garbage, stuffed between cracks in the grandstand, had also accumulated.

Quest continues for improved Bristol firehouse

BRISTOL — More than 30 potential locations for a new fire facility were proposed this past Saturday at the first public gathering to discuss potential ways to expand the Bristol Fire Department’s headquarters.

After a contentious bond that would have funded a first stage of expansion to the firehouse on North Street was rejected by voters on Town Meeting Day, 587-293, town officials committed to facilitating public discussions to identify a new site.

Police arrest Bristol resident for burglarizing five vehicles

BRISTOL — On Monday, Bristol police investigated reports of five burglarized vehicles in the areas of Pleasant Street, Elm Street, and Taylor Avenue. As a result of that investigation, police arrested Kraton Chaloux, 22, of Bristol on four counts of petit larceny and one count of possession of stolen property. Chaloux was lodged at the Chittenden County Correctional Center for lack of $500 bail and appeared in Addison District Court on Wednesday.

Stolen property from “several” of the five vehicles were recovered, Bristol police said.

BRISTOL — The Watershed Center (TWC) will hold its annual “Beltane” celebration on Sunday, April 28, at its Waterworks Property in Bristol. In Irish Gaelic, the month of May is known as Mí Bhealtaine or Bealtaine, and the festival as Lá Bealtaine (“day of Bealtaine” or, “May Day”).

Bristol to host discussion on Nicaragua's struggles with poverty

BRISTOL — The One World Library Project, located at the Lawrence Memorial Library in Bristol, will present “Understanding Nicaragua’s Struggle with Poverty” on Thursday, April 25, from 7-8:30 p.m. Alex Tuck and Isabel Gamm, co-founders of the Vermont-based nonprofit organization People Helping People Global, will give a talk and head a discussion about the extreme poverty in Nicaragua and how PHPG is working to eliminate it.

Bristol runner moved by bombing tragedy

BOSTON — Monday should have been one of the best days in Meghan Lout’s life.

The accomplished Bristol runner was enjoying her third Boston Marathon under ideal running conditions with her mom, boyfriend and pals cheering her on.

“The race was fantastic and it was a beautiful day,” Lout, 34, recalled on Wednesday. “It was a wonderful atmosphere.”

That atmosphere was shattered in the blink of an eye.

Man sentenced in nursing home robbery

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Criminal Court Judge Helen Toor on Monday handed out a four-to-10-year prison sentence to one of the two men involved in a July 4, 2012, armed robbery at a Bristol nursing home.

As part of a plea deal first agreed upon in February, Timothy Boardman, 42, of Monkton will get credit for time already served. Boardman must also pay $141 of court costs.

Teen driver charged in Bristol accident that killed elderly pedestrian

BRISTOL — A Bristol 19-year-old who was driving a car that stuck and killed an elderly pedestrian in Bristol last fall has been charged by a grand jury with grossly negligent driving with death resulting, Bristol police disclosed Friday morning.

Ashley Ann Nancollas, according to police, was driving a car down North Street near the intersection of Park Place on Nov. 24, 2012, when her car stuck Ann Roscoe, 86, of Bristol, who was crossing the street.

Bristol to mull options for firehouse upgrade
