Phoenix Rising staying in Bristol

BRISTOL — Phoenix Rising, the yoga-therapy training program on Mountain Street in Bristol, is planning to stay in town through the year’s end and possibly beyond. The business had announced plans last winter to fly the coop and move its location to Burlington.

But after a series of hoops and hurdles arose while planning the move, co-directors Kate Bentley and Jen Munyer decided to stay in Bristol for the time being — and they don’t sound the least bit disappointed about it.

Bristol teens booked in theft-­related case

BRISTOL — On July 1 Bristol police took two 13-year-old boys into custody during a pre-arranged sale of stolen property at one of the Mount Abraham Union High School fields, according to a statement by Chief Kevin Gibbs.

The juveniles have been released and cited to appear at the Addison Superior Court Juvenile Division. At least one was in possession of stolen property at the time that police intervened in the July 1 sale, Gibbs alleged. The stolen property was recovered and positively identified, according to police.

Outhouse race was a 'snap' for defending champs

BRISTOL — In the championship heat of the 35th annual Fourth of July Great Bristol Outhouse Race, cousins Chris and Kevin Berry hurtled their privy-on-wheels across the finish line and onto a fifth straight title (see audio slideshow of the race here).

“It felt like we had it the whole time, there was a couple close times but relatively it was about even,” said Kevin, 22, a Bristol native, trying to catch his breath.

Bristol man drowns on July Fourth

BRISTOL — Post-parade Fourth of July festivities took a tragic turn in Bristol on Thursday afternoon. A 26-year-old Bristol man was swept away while swimming in the New Haven River between the twin bridges on Route 116 north of Bristol village.

Officials recovered the body at 10:15 a.m. on July 5. The victim was identified as Steven Orvis, 26, of Bristol.

Vermont State Police Lt. William Jenkins said a call came in to police at around 3 p.m. regarding a man who had been swept away from the Bartlett Falls swimming area in Bristol.

Bristol woman killed in suspected Pittsford murder

PITTSFORD — Vermont State Police are investigating the suspected murder of a Bristol woman in Pittsford during the early morning of Friday, July 5.

Vermont State Police said they received an E-911 call at around 2:28 a.m. about a possible family fight on West Creek Road in Pittsford. Troopers responded and found Kristen L. Parker, 32, of Bristol, dead inside the residence. Parker’s boyfriend, identified as Christopher Sharrow, 35, of Pittsford, was also at the residence with three young children.

'Co-housing' development eyed for Bristol

BRISTOL — The creation of a “co-housing community” is being discussed for three historic homes in downtown Bristol, the Tomasi and Peake houses on North Street, and the nearby 12 North St.

Jim Mendel and Peg Kamens, the founders of the Common Ground Center in Starksboro, recently purchased the three historic, white buildings with the hope of renovating many of the currently unlivable spaces on the properties to accommodate multiple families interested in forming such a community.

Bristol spices up summer meals with cooking classes

BRISTOL — The Bristol Recreation Department will offer a series of fun cooking and nutrition classes for members of the community this summer, some designed for children and others for adults.

“We are constantly trying to poll the community to find what they are looking for,” said recreation director Darla Senecal, noting that the recreation department distributes surveys at the March town meeting and regularly solicits suggestions on its website and Facebook page.
