Raccoon, fox suspected of rabies in Bristol

BRISTOL — Town officials in Bristol are urging residents to be on the lookout for possible rabid animals. In October, there have been two reported incidents of wild animals with rabies, Town Administrator Bill Bryant said in a statement.

In the first incident, on Oct. 3, a rabid raccoon bit a man through the boot near Hardscrabble Road. The second incident, on Oct. 21, involved a “dying but apparently rabid fox on Mountain Street,” Bryant said.

Environmental Court OKs Lathrop's Bristol gravel pit proposal

BRISTOL — After a decade of litigation, an Environment Court judge last Friday gave a green light to the proposed Lathrop gravel pit in Bristol. The proposed pit on a 65-acre tract off Notch Road and Rounds Road in Bristol has been a controversial topic for many years.

Opponents of the pit, who say it would impose undue noise and traffic on Bristol village as well as run counter to town zoning, vow to appeal the approval to the Vermont Supreme Court.

Bristol-area food fundraiser a huge success

BRISTOL — Volunteers packed more than a quarter-million meals last weekend in Bristol and Essex at the culmination of a drive to send aid to starving children. With Love From Vermont, a Christian charity that operates in Chittenden, Addison and Rutland counties, had been raising money for food packets specifically designed for the bodies of malnourished children.

The charity buys the supplies, organizes volunteers to put them into individual serving packets, and WLFV’s partner, the international Christian charity Feed My Starving Children, distributes them.

Bristol Fire Department reimbursed for rescues

BRISTOL — The Bristol Fire Department has been reimbursed through a federal program for expenses incurred while conducting rescues within the Green Mountain National Forest.

The department was awarded $3,363 for providing services March 5-6, 2012, during the rescue of a mother and son that were stranded on the Bristol Cliffs within the Green Mountain National Forest. A second request of $3,118, for the search and recovery of a Bristol man who drowned in the New Haven River this past July 4 is pending.

Artwork that shows patterns from nature on display in Bristol

BRISTOL — Art on Main in Bristol announces its October-November 2013 featured artist exhibit, “Natural Patterns.” On display will be naturalist fish paintings by Lincoln artist Nick Mayer and baskets by Maura Clancy of Salisbury. The community is invited to a celebratory reception on Friday, Oct. 18, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the gallery at 25 Main St.

Bristol girls' soccer raises funds, awareness on breast cancer

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ soccer team joined hands with the National Foundation for Cancer Research to participate in its fundraising campaign Play4theCure, in which sports teams across the country donate proceeds from at least one game to NFCR.

The Eagles raised $146 for NFCR during their games versus Missisquoi Valley Union High School this past Saturday in Bristol.

Mt. Abe seeks input on building repairs pegged at millions of dollars

BRISTOL — An architect/design firm has presented the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union School Board with three options for updating the 40-year old Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School building that are estimated to range in cost from $11.6 million to $26.9 million.

The board is seeking members of the public to serve on a committee that would investigate the options.

Duck race boosts Mount Abe musical

BRISTOL — Friends of the theater program at Mount Abraham Union High School held their ninth annual Duck Race on Saturday, Oct. 5, as a fundraiser for the Bristol school’s fall musical.

A maximum of 500 ducks are sold every year by committed parents and friends of the musical tradition, yielding much-needed financial support for the November theater event that includes over a hundred middle and high school students annually.
