Lightning strike at Brandon Town Hall interrupts concert

BRANDON — The Phil Henry Trio was halfway through a concert at the Brandon Town Hall Saturday night when the building was struck by lightning during a severe thunderstorm.

To say it was electrifying would be an understatement.

It was over in a few seconds, but the bolt caused thousands of dollars in damage to the town hall’s stage lighting system.

Brandon area backs Minter, Scott

BRANDON — As the state went, so did some but not all local districts, with Brandon, Pittsford, Proctor and Leicester going for Sue Minter in Tuesday voting over Matt Dunne and Peter Galbraith in the Democratic Primary for governor.

In Goshen, Minter eked out a win by one vote over Dunne, 15-14.

West Rutland was against the trend, with Dunne winning 46-42. Whiting also went for Dunne and very decisively, 20-4. In Sudbury, Minter and Dunne finished in a tie, 24-24.

Brandon wetland conservation plan worries some neighbors

BRANDON — One month after federal natural resource officials touted the preservation of 500 acres of wetland on Union Street, abutting neighbors of the property are voicing concerns over future flooding and mosquito issues.

The largest conservation easement in Vermont, the preservation of the tract at the former Dean farm along the Otter Creek was celebrated by a host of state and federal wildlife and agriculture officials at a ceremony at the farm on June 23. The farm is now owned by Lyn and Jim Des Marais.

Olivia's Croutons eyes move to Brandon from New Haven and Middlebury

BRANDON — Olivia’s Croutons is hoping to make Brandon its new home.

The New Haven-based crouton company owned by Francie and Dave Caccavo is in the process of buying the Tucel building on Route 73 near the Neshobe School in Brandon.

The couple appeared before the Brandon Development Review Board last Wednesday night regarding a conditional use application to change the use of the existing facility that manufactures brushes to a food manufacturing plant and warehouse space.

Bluegrass and camping come together

BRANDON — The gentle sounds of recorded guitar and banjo music drifted over the field of pop-up campers and RVs at the top of Basin Road in Brandon this past Thursday afternoon. The annual Basin Bluegrass Festival was kicking off that night, and a steady influx of campers had been arriving at the gate all morning for the four-day event.

Brandon police responding to increased mental health incidents

BRANDON — There was a recurring item in the Brandon Police Log this spring. 

“Mental Health Issue, Triangle Court. Subject transported by Brandon Area Rescue to Rutland Regional Medical Center.”

Brandon police and BARS were often called to the same residence on Triangle Court off McConnell Road two or three times a week.

BRANDON — The stormwater culvert planned for the Neshobe River in downtown Brandon is on the fast track for completion, thanks to Vermont’s congressional delegation.

In a press release issued Thursday, the offices of Sen. Patrick Leahy, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Peter Welch announced a $1.3 million Hazard Mitigation Grant to the town from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The new grant will fund the construction phase of a culvert under Route 7 designed to divert floodwater from the Neshobe River.
