BRANDON — Voters in Brandon overwhelmingly approved a $395,000 bond for a new police station, and they approved all other items on their Town Meeting Day warning, as well.
The town budget, the Neshobe School budget and 13 other articles on the ballot were all given the green light by the Brandon voting public.
Officials said 888 Brandon residents turned out to vote on Town Meeting Day, which is roughly 45 percent of those on the town checklist.
BRANDON — The Public Service Board (PSB) has approved a Brandon couple’s application to install a solar array on their Mount Pleasant neighborhood property.
Jim and Karen Emerson received a Certificate of Public Good on Jan. 28 to install a 10-foot-by-12-foot solar array at their home on Prospect Street, but an appeal is not out of the question.
BRANDON — A snapshot can tell a short story, but a photo album can weave a longer, more enriching tale.
That is the philosophy behind the Otter Valley Union High School Moosalamoo Center’s concept of narrative report cards versus traditional letter or number grades.
BRANDON — The Brandon selectboard on Monday approved a proposed $2,018,360 municipal spending plan for 2010-2011 that includes money for a part-time recreation coordinator and a significant increase in economic development funding.
Those funds are available because there are no raises in the proposed budget for town management, including the town manager, the superintendent of public works, and the police chief. One full-time public works employee has also been cut, leaving three full-time workers and the superintendent.
BRANDON — Four-year-old Aiden Decker has seen his share of tragedy. His father, Joey Decker, died of a heroin overdose in 2007. Then, after a heroic act on the part of his maternal grandmother, Aiden escaped death in the icy waters of Lake Dunmore on Jan. 9 when Terry Flynn tossed him onto the ice as her snowmobile was sinking into the lake.
Terry Flynn survived, as did Aiden and, miraculously, his six-year-old cousin Jeremiah Popp.
BRANDON — The foundation is being laid in Brandon to nurture local economic development.
There are signs of possible movement in attracting potential investors and filling some large, empty industrial buildings, including decisions regarding improvements to the town zoning ordinance and the water system.
ZONING
BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School board last week approved a $10,675,889 spending plan for 2010-2011 to send to voters on Town Meeting Day, but the school’s administrative structure for next year is still unclear.
The big question is: Will there be a dean of students and if so, what will that position look like?
BRANDON — He said he never thought he’d be a school superintendent, but Otter Valley Union High School Principal Dana Cole-Levesque has accepted an offer from the Rutland South Supervisory Union (RSSU) to take over the helm later this year.
Cole-Levesque, 59, announced his resignation from OV effective in June at the school finance committee meeting last week.
“I’m very fortunate,” he said in an interview Monday. “It certainly is going to be a change, but it is a similarly sized supervisory union.”
