ADDISON COUNTY — Michael O’Neill had a run-in with a colorful but noxious weed last summer when he saw the plant and, out of curiosity, smelled and touched its tall, green stems and yellow blossoms. Unfortunately, the Shoreham man suffered an adverse reaction — itching and mildly blistering skin — but it was not bad enough for him to seek medical help for the condition.

Earlier this summer, however, O’Neill accidentally brushed his hand across one of the plants and this time suffered severe blistering.

Organic milk boom slows down

By KATHRYN FLAGG
ADDISON COUNTY — Bridport farmer Jon Rutter was getting by — but just barely -— as a conventional dairy farmer.

“Economically, we were just treading water, if not drowning, under the conventional market,” Rutter said, looking back.

That’s when Rutter became a convert — that is to say, when he made the choice to go organic. That was back in 2001. Now, Rutter milks around 270 cows on his Bridport spread.

Stimulus funds aim to boost homeownership

By KATHRYN FLAGG
ADDISON COUNTY — An influx of economic stimulus funding from Washington, D.C., could mean good news for hundreds of Vermonters struggling to buy or keep their homes.

That news came last week, when Vermont’s Congressional delegation announced that three Vermont nonprofit organizations — including one that serves Addison County — will divvy up $6 million to spur community development.

Late blight threatens potatoes and tomatoes

By KATHRYN FLAGG
ADDISON COUNTY — In Whiting, Karen LeRoy is on the lookout for a culprit that could wreak havoc in her garden this year. And this summer, it’s not the usual critters, like deer or rabbits or pesky insects, that pose the greatest threat — it’s the late blight, a fungal disease that horticulturists say could wipe out tomato and potato crops in Vermont.

Porter Medical Center earns tough grade on BISHCA report card

By KATHRYN FLAGG
MIDDLEBURY — Based on scores on a recent statewide hospital “report card,” Middlebury’s Porter Medical Center might appear to have a bit of studying up to do.

Hospital officials say they’re taking the scores seriously, but when it comes to painting a complete picture of just how well Porter is doing, the June report card only goes so far.

Dairymen call for new pricing plan

audet(2).jpg

By KATHRYN FLAGG
ADDISON COUNTY — Dairy farmers around the country are rallying behind a price stabilization program that some dairy farmers hope could help reduce volatility in bulk milk prices, which plummeted this winter to a low of roughly $10 per hundredweight, $7 or $8 below the cost of production for Vermont farmers.

But with milk prices projected to rebound somewhat this fall, advocates for the new program say farmers need to move fast before rising bulk prices dissuade some dairymen from pushing for change.

Local representatives help override budget veto

By JOHN FLOWERS
MONTPELIER — The overwhelming majority of Addison County lawmakers on Tuesday voted with the majority in a successful override of Gov. James Douglas’s budget veto, thereby setting in stone a spending plan for fiscal year 2010.

The House voted 100 to 50 — the bare minimum two-thirds majority necessary — to override Douglas’s veto of the $4.5 billion spending plan. It was the first budget veto in the state’s history.

In the digital age, booksellers adapt business to stay afloat

ADDISON COUNTY — It’s not just bricks-and-mortar bookstores — which have long faced competition from online booksellers like Amazon.com — that are in trouble these days.

Books themselves could be on the way out.

Last week’s tech buzz swirled around the Kindle DX, Amazon’s electronic reader that some technology enthusiasts predict could mean the death of the book as we know it.

Vermonters prepare for possible spread of swine flu

Posted on April 30, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — As reported cases of the swine influenza cropped up around the country, Vermont remained unaffected at midweek by the airborne, contagious disease that reached epidemic proportions in Mexico. Still, local and state officials said they were on the lookout for the disease should it spread, and one local high school stepped up precautions after a student trip returned from south of the border last week.
