ADDISON COUNTY — On April 18, 1970, police officers spent the day in Addison stationed at the Vermont terminus of the Champlain Bridge, handing out trash bags to motorists on their way into the state and asking that they clean up the roadsides during their drive.

Local response rates to U.S. Census vary

By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON COUNTY — With the official deadline for U.S. residents to mail in their Census form — April 16 — passed, Addison County as of Monday stood right at the Vermont average for compliance, 65 percent.

That average also equals Vermont’s 2000 rate of mail-in participation of 65 percent, although the nation as a whole lagged the 2000 compliance number, 72-71 percent, as of Wednesday. The U.S. Census Bureau will update those figures through Friday, and the 2010 national rate could still equal that of 2000.

Higher fees likely in store for Current Use

Posted on April 15, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — Changes are afoot for Vermont’s so-called “Current Use” program in an effort to trim $1.6 million from the popular tax abatement program.

A committee bill that would charge every landowner in the program a $128 fee passed the Senate finance committee last week, and was on notice for a second reading early this week. As the Addison Independent went to press on Wednesday, the schedule tentatively called for the bill to be discussed on the Senate floor on Wednesday or Thursday.

Farmers team up for collaborative CSA

ADDISON COUNTY — On a brisk mid-April morning, Jeremy Gildrien worked alone in the large greenhouse beside his Middlebury home, fashioning from a mound of earth the “soil blocks” that would someday soon nurture small, green seedlings.

The breeze cut through the greenhouse as Gildrien worked among the rows of spinach and radishes and pea shoots, each sending up sprouts. He and his wife, Caitlin, are beginning farmers, and they’re learning that much of the work on their vegetable farm is solitary.

Dairies hunker down for more low prices

Posted on April 8, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont dairy farmers slogged through the worst milk prices they’d seen in decades for much of 2009, struggling to stay in business as they sold their milk at prices so low they could not cover the cost of production.

Now, milk price forecasts suggest that 2010 isn’t shaping up to be much better for dairymen, many of whom went into debt to the tune of $800 to $1,000 per cow last year in order to continue farming.

Warm temps slow down sugarmaking

ADDISON COUNTY — Spring is sprung!

While warm weather this weekend may have delighted most county residents, temperatures that pushed 60 degrees in parts of the region caused a bit of consternation from local sugarmakers, many of whom worried the warm spell could signal the end to a brief maple sugaring season this year.

Area homes receive census forms as 'address glitch' is discovered

Posted on March 18, 2010 |
By John Flowers

ADDISON COUNTY — Federal Census Bureau officials are working to clarify a glitch they said may give some people the impression that their true town of residency has been misrepresented on their decennial census forms.

Addison County residents began receiving their census forms this week. Homeowners here and throughout the country are being asked to promptly complete the 10-question form and send it back. The federal government uses the new information each decade to track demographic trends that have a direct bearing on federal funding and reapportionment in the U.S. Congress.

ADDISON COUNTY — Acting in accordance with a new federal mandate, school officials in Vermont last week identified 10 of the state’s lowest-achieving schools, and offered the promise of hefty federal funding to those willing to make significant changes.

Addison County students attend four of the 10 schools that cropped up on the list: Mount Abraham Union High School in Bristol, the Bridport Central School, Otter Valley Union High School in Brandon, and Fair Haven Union High School, where students from Orwell are schooled.

Sugarmakers consider new 'check valve' technology

Posted on March 8, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — At sugarbushes around the county, many veteran sugarmakers have kicked into high gear for the season.

And, although cold temperatures in the mountains meant sugaring operations in Starksboro, Lincoln and Bristol were still on hold early last week, the sap was running in the valley at Andy Hutchison’s Mt. Pleasant Sugarworks in Leicester.

Hutchison has 3,000 trees tapped this year. Like many other area sugarmakers, he’s testing the new plastic “check valves” that could potentially boost production at his sugarbush.
