State OKs sealing of pipeline records

MONTPELIER — The Public Service Board has approved a protective agreement between Vermont Gas Systems and the Department of Public Service that will limit the public’s access to documents related to Phase II of the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project.

New Open Meetings Law raises questions

MONTPELIER — Gov. Peter Shumlin has signed a bill that makes changes to the state’s open meeting laws; some organizations have raised concerns that the new law will decrease transparency in government.

The intention of the law is to modernize the state’s open meeting laws, which Shumlin said have not been significantly updated in several decades.

Severe thunderstorm rips through county

BRIDPORT — A severe thunderstorm tore through the heart of Addison County Tuesday afternoon, dumping rain and hail, as well as strong wind gusts that may have been a tornado.

The sky to the west, over Lake Champlain, darkened throughout the humid afternoon. The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for Addison and Rutland counties around 4 p.m.

The Outside Story: Sneaky plants trick gullible ants

I don’t trust flowers.

There are grounds for my suspicion; flowering plants are proven masters of deception. For instance, the sundew uses sparkling droplets of sticky “faux dew” to ensnare and digest curious flies; bee orchids dupe male wasps into wasting their copulatory efforts on floral structures that look and smell like a female wasp. And what about humans? As I labor on behalf of flowers, fertilizing, tilling, watering and sweating, I sometimes wonder if I’m being led down the proverbial garden path. Exactly who’s cultivating whom?

Artists open their studios to the public this Saturday and Sunday

ADDISON COUNTY/BRANDON — The Spring Open Studio Tour over Memorial Day Weekend offers a great way for locals and visitors alike to see the Green Mountain State as well as the work of Vermont artist right where it is made. Bright yellow signs are placed along Vermont’s roads to mark the way to studios of craftspeople and fine artists during the self-guided tour on May 24 and 25 at a time when the landscape is fresh and inviting and without the crowds of summer and fall.

Memorial Day parades to honor veterans, kick off the summer

ADDISON COUNTY — Bands play as they march past, men wearing fezzes whiz by in peppy little cars and parents let their children scramble into the street for candy tossed to them by strangers — it must be time for Memorial Day parades.

Six Addison County towns will host Memorial Day parades this weekend, and one town — Monkton — will wrap it all up with a solemn observance on Monday evening.

Blue is the color of a crystal clear sky at midday. Although its intensity ranges from brilliant sapphire opposite the sun, to the palest baby blue near the horizon, it is true blue.

Blue flowers are also beloved by gardeners, and yet they seem really hard to find. There are plenty of flowers with overtones of red — pinkish-blue, mauve, purple and lavender — mostly blooming in summer and fall.

Pipeline opponents, supporters testify in Shoreham

SHOREHAM — More than 170 people flooded the Shoreham Elementary School gym on Wednesday evening to weigh in on a controversial plan to extend a natural gas pipeline from Middlebury to the International Paper Co. mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y., with most of the speakers urging state regulators to deny a permit for a $70 million project for environmental and public safety reasons.
