Vermont State Police Log: Car crashes increase as roads get slippery

ADDISON COUNTY — Winter weather finally arrived for real last week and one could see the effects of slippery roads in the number of serious motor vehicle crashes in Addison County, particularly on Dec. 12 in the heart of the snowstorm, four of which Vermont State Police handled.

Grant to fund opiate education in Bristol-area grade schools

MIDDLEBURY — A federal grant will be used to “HELP” students in Bristol-area schools learn about and fight opiate addiction.

The $15,000 Regional Prevention Partnership grant, which flows through the Vermont Department of Health to the United Way of Addison County, will enhance UWAC’s “HELP” initiative.

Local United Way searching for a new leader: McGowan steps down after 14 years

MIDDLEBURY — United Way of Addison County Executive Director Kate McGowan has helped the leaders of a lot of local nonprofits strategize on funding and delivering charitable services to the people who need them most.

After 14 years spent improving human services in Addison County, McGowan now wants to help nonprofits on a statewide scale. On Thursday she announced that she’s resigning from her position to become interim director of the Center for New Leadership, or CNL, which is run out of the Marlboro College Graduate School in Brattleboro.

Poet's Corner: The horses of summer

August at Dusk

 

The sun has dropped below Sterling Mountain,

freeing for the brief night hours the pasture

of endless summer sun’s incessant beating heat.

In relief the grasses breathe out vapors.

 

In the rising, warm air stream,

like a kind thought before a friend speaks,

we sense in the night a benign presence

before their huge, dark bodies take shape.

ADDISON COUNTY — A number of Addison County-area churches have set their schedules for special Christmas events and services.

BRANDON

St. Mary’s Church will hold a Christmas Eve Mass on Sunday, Dec. 24, at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Christmas Day Mass on Monday, Dec. 25, will be at 10 a.m.

St. Thomas & Grace Episcopal Church (Route 7, Brandon village) will hold a services on Christmas Eve, Sunday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. (children should arrive at 6:30 p.m. to prepare for their part in the service).

Area hunters bag a record number of deer in 2017

ADDISON COUNTY — A wildly successful December muzzleloader season helped hunters in 2017 set a record for deer weighed in a calendar year in Addison County. At least this is the best since 2005, when Vermont wildlife officials banned shooting spikehorn bucks during November’s 16-day rifle season, the most popular Vermont deer hunting season.

Vermont State Police Log: Driver in crash leaves scene, then turns himself in

ADDISON COUNTY — This past Friday, Dec. 8, at a quarter after 5 p.m. Vermont State Police responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash on Route 7 at the intersection with Greenbush Road in Ferrisburgh. The Vergennes and Ferrisburgh fire departments and Vergennes Area Rescue Squad also scrambled to the scene.

ACSD board to consider major staff cuts: Draft budget reflects 14 teacher layoffs

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central School District board members knew they would be in for a shock when they asked ACSD administrators to show them what a level-funded budget would look like for the 2018-2019 academic year.

And a shock is what they’ll get on Monday, Dec. 11, when they learn that a level-funded spending plan for the district’s nine schools could translate into a reduction of 14 licensed teachers, 18 paraprofessionals, a principal and a central office worker.
