Vermont State Police Log: Troopers step up traffic enforcement efforts

ADDISON COUNTY — Local drivers may have seen more Vermont State Police troopers on the highways lately.

During the latter half of last week and the first half of this week, state police increased traffic enforcement efforts and traffic safety messaging statewide as part of our response to a tragic week of highway fatalities. See full story in A section.

Open Farm Week continues through Sunday

ADDISON COUNTY — For the third consecutive year, farmers across Vermont will once again open their barn doors and garden gates to welcome the public for a behind-the-scenes look at Vermont’s vibrant working landscapes. Vermont Open Farm Week 2017 runs  through Sunday, Aug. 20.

Last Resort Farm in Monkton held a workshop on braiding garlic this past Tuesday as part of Open Farm Week.

Editors note: One of the great things about the Addison County Fair and Field Days is there is so dang much to take in the farm animals, the food and drink, the competitions, the thousands of friends and neighbors wandering around the crowded fairgrounds in the middle of a rural paradise. Local addiction treatment options expand: Services growing in three area towns

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County will soon see a substantial expansion of Medication Assisted Treatment services for locals who are addicted to narcotic painkillers. That treatment — which includes the prescribing of Suboxone — is now being offered in Middlebury and will soon take root in Vergennes.

And leaders of Mountain Health — a Federally Qualified Health Center in Bristol — confirmed that beginning next month it also will dispense Medically Assisted Treatment, known as MAT.

Mini donkey contest kicks off Field Days

NEW HAVEN — As the sun shone down on the opening day of the 2017 Addison County Fair & Field Days, several miniatures donkeys earned class titles and one became overall champion. But ascertaining which deserved the crown was not as easy as it might seem.

“It’s a lot harder (to judge) donkeys because when they get into their stubborn or scared streak they don’t always walk as straight as they normally would,” said Kathy Kennett, this year’s judge.

YouthWorks teaches teens host of skills for workplace success

MIDDLEBURY — More strict than school, less strict than a traditional job. That’s the mantra of YouthWorks, an initiative sponsored by several Addison County and statewide organizations aiming to make area youth career ready.

This summer, 11 students ages 16-21 have been taking part in a YouthWorks program at Hannaford Career Center and at worksites to develop a variety of personal and professional skills. The goal is to teach them not only how to land a job, but to do well once they’re employed.

Local man uses Suboxone to help him kick addiction habit

BRISTOL — Ethan was involved in an accident three years ago that continues to threaten his health, even though his physical wounds healed a long time ago.

Part of the “cure” at the time — some heavy-duty narcotic painkillers — has become the illness: An addiction that led to overdoses that almost took the young man’s life.

“When you first wake up in the morning, you’re thinking: ‘How can I get my fix so I can function?” Ethan told the Addison Independent of his darkest hours.

Jeff Olsen named Addison County Realtor of the Year

Olsen has been a Realtor with Addison County Real Estate since 2015 and recently received his broker’s license. He has served as legislative affairs representative and vice president for ACBOR, where he is incoming president.

Welch among Congressional 'Problem Solvers' taking bipartisan approach to health care reform

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Vermont’s sole Congressman, Democrat Peter Welch, is hopeful Congress will be able to address some of the weaknesses in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), more commonly called Obamacare, following Republican efforts to repeal the popular law.

Welch is part of a bi-partisan group in the House of 20 Republican representatives and 20 Democrats calling themselves the Problem Solvers. They have proposed four actions Congress can take to reduce premiums in the individual insurance market and provide stability for insurance companies.
