Residents tune in for Welch town hall talk

ADDISON COUNTY — Three hundred sixty callers dialed in on Tuesday night for an hour-long Addison County telephone conference with Vermont’s lone congressman, Peter Welch. Fielding questions from county residents, the Hartland Democrat tackled issues ranging from those far afield — like the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan — to those closer to home, including concerns about energy efficiency, the effect of health care legislation, and dairy industry and immigration reform.

Lawmakers tighten Current Use rules

ADDISON COUNTY — Changes to the so-called “Current Use” program were still being debated at 11 p.m. last Wednesday night as lawmakers worked furiously toward adjournment, and the bill that slipped through in the final hours of the day was among the last OK’d before the General Assembly dispersed.

County fruit growers still evaluating frost damage

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County orchardists and fruit growers are assessing the damage to their crops after a cold snap swept through the region last week, but most are saying its too early to know how temperatures that dipped well into the 20s early on May 11 could affect the region’s harvest.

The cold weather was worrisome to fruit growers because frostbitten blossoms could kill the chance of fruit developing later in the season. By and large, though, orchardists in the region were optimistic after last week’s frost.

County farmers' markets expand for selling season

ADDISON COUNTY — The days are getting warmer, and soon farmers markets will be springing up again all around the county.

All five area markets will sport changes in operations that each hopes will better serve those who want to buy locally produced vegetables, fruits, other food products and crafts.

Dairy giants accused of monopoly

ADDISON COUNTY — Dairy farmers in the Northeast are training their sights on the massive Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) co-op and processing giant Dean Foods in an effort to prove that price fixing and illegal monopolization of the dairy industry has kept milk prices artificially low for struggling producers.

These farmers’ action represents the latest in a series of lawsuits around the country alleging that a lack of competition in the dairy processing industry has resulted in record profits for milk processors at the cost of lower prices for farmers.

Internet outage hinders local businesses

ADDISON COUNTY — Some FairPoint Communications customers early last week struggled with a break in Internet access due to a defective connection in the line.

FairPoint spokeswoman Sabina Haskell said that the company was alerted to the connection problems on the morning of Monday, April 26, when many Middlebury area customers called in with connection problems.

Updates eyed for quality seal program

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont’s Agency of Agriculture is overhauling its Vermont Seal of Quality program after a kerfuffle this winter put the allegedly ill-managed program on the chopping block.

But now agency officials, along with Vermont producers, are heading back to the drawing board to revive — and revise — the seal of quality after legislators kept the program alive with a $50,000 appropriation in the jobs bill signed into law by Gov. James Douglas earlier this month.

Locals stranded in Europe by volcano

ADDISON COUNTY — Air traffic over Europe slowly picked up late last week after a giant plume of volcanic ash brought airports across the continent to a standstill, stranding hundreds of thousands of travelers and wreaking economic havoc to the tune of more than $1 billion.

The massive flight disruptions overseas — the largest since Sept. 11, 2001 — reached all the way to Addison County. Local travelers found their spring break trips disrupted when the unexpected disaster grounded them in airports from Germany to Ireland.

Green Up still going strong after 40 years

ADDISON COUNTY — On April 18, 1970, police officers spent the day in Addison stationed at the Vermont terminus of the Champlain Bridge, handing out trash bags to motorists on their way into the state and asking that they clean up the roadsides during their drive.
