Top stories of 2015: #8 — Juvenile and drug cases flood an overwhelmed justice system

Gov. Peter Shumlin shined a bright spotlight on the drug addiction problem in January of 2014 and, with a lot of help from many other advocates for those addicts, began to mobilize Vermonters to help solve the problem. But in 2015 it was clear that the opiate crisis is still ongoing. Drug addiction is still messing up previously promising young lives, causing heartache and fear in many, many Vermont families, and mounting untold costs to the economy.

The amount of disruption that drugs is causing was particularly clear to those who come in contact with the courts.

Addison County’s two largest institutions and employers welcomed new top leadership this year. Laurie Patton succeeded Ron Liebowitz as Middlebury College’s 17th president and Lynn Boggs took the helm of Porter Medical Center as the president and CEO, following the retirement of James Daily.

Top stories of 2015: #10 — Critical town buildings take shape in Middlebury, Bristol and Ferrisburgh

After years of discussion, major infrastructure projects began in both Middlebury and Bristol in 2015, while Ferrisburgh also went big last year.

In Middlebury, a crew broke ground in the spring on the $6.5 million project to build a downtown municipal office building and a Creek Road town gymnasium and recreation center. After much debate, town voters had backed the projects in March 2014 (and reaffirmed that in May 2014).

It's National Radon Action Month: test your house for radon gas

VERMONT — Long-term exposure to radon gas is the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. Criterium-Lalancette Engineers is working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in a nationwide campaign to educate Americans about the dangers of radon exposure and to encourage them to take action to protect their homes and families.

ADDISON COUNTY — A Christmas Eve almost as warm as the night of the Fourth of July, the temperatures even higher in some parts of Vermont than those in the subtropics. Streets, rooftops, branches, fields and hills barren and snowless until the last few days of December.

Most people have been enjoying the unseasonably balmy weather, even if it seemed a little strange. One group that really welcomed the late start to winter were those Vermonters responsible for Addison County roads.

Hazardous waste disposal free in county

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Solid Waste Management District in Middlebury received a grant of $24,549 from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation. The grant is used to help fund household hazardous waste collection and disposal for the district’s 20 member towns.

Supplemental funding approved for Champlain Valley Head Start

VERMONT — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has notified Champlain Valley Head Start (CVHS) that its full request for $543,000 in supplemental funding has been approved. This is great news for the CVHS Early Head Start - Child Care Partnerships (EHS-CCP) project CVHS launched in fall of 2015.

Lincoln, Ferrisburgh and Starksboro get vote tabulators

LINCOLN — A new state law is requiring three Addison County communities to swap manual ballot counting for automatic tabulators, beginning with the next general elections.

At issue are some tweaks that lawmakers made last session to the state’s election laws that now require communities with more than 1,000 registered voters to use automatic tabulators for counting ballots in general elections. The change officially takes effect on July 1 of next year, according to William Senning, director of elections for the Vermont Secretary of State’s Office.
