Bills put spotlight on migrant farm labor

Schools consider shorter summer vacations

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County schools are being invited to adopt a new calendar that would reshape the academic year in a manner that would shorten the traditional summer vacation. In exchange for some shorter breaks, supporters believe the change would allow for more staff development, tutoring for students who need it most, and work-study arrangements involving kids and local businesses.

Vermont driving bill tied to national immigration issue

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Advocates for Vermont’s migrant laborers know that a driver’s license bill, such as the one being considered by the Vermont Legislature, is a short-term solution to what is ultimately a federal problem. Few would dispute that the dairy industries in states like Vermont have been saved by migrant labor, but the federal government does not offer a visa program to supply labor-strapped dairy farms with legal, documented foreign workers, like the H-2A visa does for seasonal agricultural work.

Local police and their dogs to make cameos on TV show

VERGENNES — Two Vergennes Police Department members, one Vermont State Police trooper from the New Haven barracks and two police canines from those agencies are set to make cameos on this week’s episode of “Golden Boy,” a CBS show that debuted in February.

Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel and his dog, Akido; Vermont State Police Sgt. Eugene Duplissis and his canine, Argus; and Vergennes detective Jason Ouellette were all invited to New York City in October to film brief appearances in the show.

House ag committee to consider hemp farming bill

WEYBRIDGE — A bill that could pave the way for the Vermont Secretary of Agriculture to develop a procedure for issuing licenses to farmers interested in growing industrial hemp was discussed at the legislative breakfast in Weybridge last Monday, April 15.

The bill, H.490, is in the House Agriculture Committee. Local Reps. Harvey Smith, R-New Haven, and Will Stevens, I-Shoreham, are members of that committee.

Local sugarmakers say maple season sets records

ADDISON COUNTY — Last year’s maple sugaring season may have ranked among the worst in recent memory. But in 2013, Mother Nature delivered in spades.

“This year broke all records,” said Tom Audet of Ledge Haven Farm in Orwell. “In quantity, quality and length of season, it was just a record breaker.”

Like Audet, sugarmakers across the county are reporting a record season.

Local runners dodge tragedy at Boston Marathon

BOSTON — Ben Bruno of Middlebury was at the family meeting area about two blocks from the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday when two bombs exploded. The 28-year-old — who had finished the race in 3:03.52, about an hour before the first blast— and his companions were confused when they heard the explosions.

“I didn’t want to assume the worst,” he said. “I hoped for the best — maybe it was a transformer blowing or a car backfiring.

Watch out for Lyme disease in pets

VERMONT — If you’ve ever seen a tick — especially if it is on you or your pet friend — you’ll never forget it. As if ticks were not bad enough, these bloodsuckers can also transmit serious diseases. While Lyme disease is fairly well known in humans, not everyone is aware of how it can affect our dogs. April has been designated National Prevent Lyme Disease in Dogs month by the Lyme Disease Foundation.
