Principal of an Oregon high school hired as ACSU superintendent

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union Board on Wednesday evening offered the job of superintendent to Peter Burrows, principal of Willamette High School in Eugene, Ore., and Burrows accepted.

Burrows will replace Superintendent Gail Conley, who will retire at the end of June.

Animal communicator helps people understand their pets

One of these communicators is Alyson Young, a certified energy medicine practitioner and animal communicator (as well as certified practitioner of several other holistic healing practices).

Maple sugaring season is off to a sweet start

ADDISON COUNTY — Last year’s sugaring season was the shortest in recent memory. But this year, sugarmakers around Addison County say the season is at least getting off to a sweet start.

“I’m off to the best start I ever had,” said Mike Christian, of Village Sugarworks in Orwell. “I’ve been sugaring for the better part of 40 years, 10 years on my own, and this is the best I’ve ever seen.”

Panel looks at what drives the Addison County economy

Middlebury dairy farmer Bob Foster was part of a four-member panel organized and moderated by Bruce Lisman of the Campaign for Vermont, or CFV, that spent the snowy evening of Feb. 19 at the Ilsley Library discussing how to improve economic security and prosperity for everyone.

Local police — and dogs — get cameo on network TV show

NEW YORK CITY — Three local police officers and two police canines are set to make cameos on an episode of “Golden Boy,” a new CBS television show that made its network debut on Feb. 26 and will next be seen this Friday at 9 p.m.

Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel and his dog, Akido; Vermont State Police Sergeant Eugene Duplissis and his canine, Argus; and Vergennes detective Jason Ouellette were all invited to New York City in October to film brief appearances in the show.

ACSU inks teachers' contract, settles Sease lawsuit

County groups unite in anti-hunger effort

MIDDLEBURY — State officials often credit Addison County with having one of the best human services networks in the state.

Representatives of that network will be meeting on March 18 to explore ways of making it even better.

At issue is a proposal to create a “Hunger Council of Addison County.” The idea is that representatives of local hunger-fighting agencies would meet four times per year as a council, sharing information about how to make their respective programs more effective in supplying food to the growing number of people who need it.
