ADDISON COUNTY — Dairy farmers in the Northeast are searching for more information in a lawsuit charging Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) and its affiliate, Dairy Marketing Services (DMS) with price-fixing and monopolization of the regional dairy market.

On March 24, U.S. District Court Judge Christina Reiss in Burlington declined to make a decision on a request by attorneys representing Northeast dairy farmers to release a number of sealed court documents pertaining to the case.

ADDISON COUNTY — After the Toxics Action Center published a January report illuminating 1,421 hazardous waste sites across Vermont, and 214 in Addison County, it’s understandable that many local residents are concerned about the safety of their land.

Fortunately, the Addison County Regional Planning Commission (ACRPC) has funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to run a Brownfield Program, which identifies and assesses contaminated sites at no or low cost to qualifying property owners in Addison County.

Vermont gas eyes county for pipeline

By John Flowers

ADDISON COUNTY — A Chittenden County-based utility is working on a $60 million-$70 million plan to extend natural gas pipeline through Vergennes and Middlebury within the next five years.

Proponents contend the project would offer a cheaper, cleaner heating fuel source for area businesses and homes; though some critics urge that environmental and cost claims not be taken at face value.

ADDISON COUNTY — What’s the big difference between this year’s maple sugar season and last year’s?

The snow.

A burden to some and a blessing to others, local sugarmakers say this winter’s massive snowfall is setting the tone for the year’s sugar season.

“It’s just been a struggle,” said Bill Heffernan of Heffernan Family Sugarworks in Starksboro about tapping 9,500 trees beginning on Feb. 16. “It’s tough in three to four feet of snow.”

Pellet bag disposal raises environmental questions

Posted on March 17, 2011 |
By Andrea Suozzo

ADDISON COUNTY — Until early this year, plastic disposal was not an issue that Ferrisburgh resident Ann Poskas had to think too hard about.

When Casella Waste Systems discontinued its plastic bag recycling program, stating that the thin film clogged its systems, Poskas began storing her bags.

Like others who heat their homes with wood pellets that are delivered in plastic bags — which problematically for recyclers are dusty inside and like other plastic bags therefore hard to handle — Postas quickly noticed those bags began to add up.

By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON COUNTY — This winter’s relentless snowfall has not only strained residents’ patience, but it has also stretched town budgets and worn out highway workers, according to at least a small sample of local municipal officials and road foremen.

Not only have expenses for materials like sand and salt gone up, but labor costs have also risen as road crews have worked long hours trying to keep roads and sidewalks clear. Meanwhile repair bills have also mounted as equipment has been pushed to the limit.
