Ways of Seeing: Building bridges in a young girl's life

Village2Village began as an alliance between the village of Bristol, Vt. and a village in Serere, Uganda. Its mission is to provide comprehensive, empowering, respectful and compassionate care for vulnerable children and their families, one life at a time. I became a sponsor in 2009.

My first letter from Bridget arrived. It was handwritten in a tidy yet animated script on a lined sheet of white paper. I searched this brief introductory note for a clue to the person in the photo I received of a sweet-faced girl with sensitive eyes and a reluctant smile.

ADDISON COUNTY — While most election-season signs dotting county roadsides support candidates for statewide races and local Vermont House and Senate seats, an unusual number have also sprouted up backing two men seeking an unpaid county-wide job in which the officeholder rarely, if ever, does anything: high bailiff.

Two-term incumbent Charles Clark Jr., a Republican who is also the Addison County Sheriff Department’s chief deputy, is facing a challenge from former longtime county deputy and private sector security employee Ron Holmes, a Democrat.

Candidates hear farmer concerns at ag forum

Posted on October 27, 2016 |
By Gaen Murphree

MIDDLEBURY — Farmers had a chance to speak directly to prospective legislators at the Addison County Relocalization Network (ACORN) forum on local food and farming, held on Oct. 19 at Middlebury College’s Kirk Alumni Center.

Topping the list of farmer concerns were the challenges of marketing and distribution in a rural state with a low population density.

Senate Candidate Claire Ayer Q & A

HEALTH CARE: Nearly every economically developed country in the world provides healthcare to all of its citizens at much less cost per person and of quality higher than ours in the United States. We should be able to do that. While Vermont is not in a position to go it alone right now, we are working to contain the costs of healthcare and improve access to care in Vermont. Vermont learned from Vermont Health Connect that we don’t do well overseeing huge technology projects, especially when on short, mandated timeline.

Senate Candidate Christopher Bray Q & A

By Christopher Bray

HEALTH CARE: In the past, we’ve had a purely private solution that’s left many millions of Americans without health care at all, and many others with only marginally affordable care. Medicare, Medicaid, and the Veterans system have been essential to providing care to many tens of millions of Americans. They should continue.

HEALTH CARE: Government should do everything it can to lower the cost of high quality and easily accessible health care. Education, training and outreach which would help people to live healthier lives should be part of this initiative. We should wait for the report which is coming out in December to decide the fate of Vermont Health Connect.
