BRISTOL — A proposed Bristol Elementary School budget that would increase spending by 2.76 percent in the next fiscal year is drawing criticism from some faculty and staff who are concerned that it would cut several staff positions and hurt students.

The $4.9 million spending plan, which the school board tentatively signed off on last week, would curb costs in several areas, including by eliminating one faculty position and five non-special education support staff positions.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College consistently ranks among the top liberal arts institutions in the U.S., and the college prides itself on fostering a close-knit community of students and faculty on its small campus.

But for seniors Sophie Kligler, Noah Goss-Woliner and Molly Parizeau, this means it is possible for students to go through their studies at Middlebury without learning much about surrounding towns, or meeting regular Vermonters.

“It’s easy to be, especially as a student, stuck in that Middlebury bubble,” Kligler said.

Lincoln moves forward on new town office plan

Posted on January 19, 2015 |
By Zach Despart

LINCOLN — An ad hoc committee of residents appointed by the Lincoln selectboard will meet Wednesday to finalize a recommendation to the board on how to proceed with building a new town office building.

The committee has been working since September on the proposal, and will meet on Jan. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the present town office.

Selectman Bill Finger said the town has had discussions about replacing the 45-year-old town office building since 2009. He said the growth of the town has rendered the structure too small.

BRISTOL — A preschool in Ethiopia has potable drinking water, thanks to the efforts of two Addison County students half a world away.

Fifth-grader Carter Monk and third-grader Noah Konczal organized a 5K road race to raise money to repair the well at the Negat Kokeb preschool, in Hawassa, Ethiopia.

Konczal got the idea after his teacher at Monkton Central School, Stacey Carter, went to Ethiopia last February with a group of Addison County teachers as part of an exchange program.

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Vermont Gas Systems President and CEO Don Rendall doesn’t have the biggest office at the company’s headquarters in South Burlington.

In fact, he doesn’t have an office at all. Rather, he set up his desk in the second floor reception area, by a row of windows that overlook Swift Street, and gave the administrative assistant that had occupied the space her own office down the hall.
