BRISTOL — The Bristol Elementary School board has taken steps to get feedback for a new spending proposal, laid out a timeline of public forums and set a date by which it hopes to warn a new budget vote.

Board members decided at their Monday evening meeting that they will host a community forum on Monday, March 23, at 7 p.m. in the BES cafeteria, during which Bristol residents will split into small groups and answer questions posed by the board.

MONKTON — As the Monkton Central School board works on a new spending plan to put before voters, it is soliciting input from the community.

“We’re hopeful that we can find the path to the budget that’s going to be acceptable to voters by getting input from the community,” board member Marikate Kelley said late last week after the board’s Thursday evening school board meeting.

Vermont Gas admits it kept regulators in the dark on pipeline cost increase

MONTPELIER — Vermont Gas Systems officials last year knew the company’s proposed natural gas pipeline through Addison County would cost much more than anticipated, but waited more than five months to tell regulators — even after the Department of Public Service requested that it do so.

This information came to light in recent testimony by Vermont Gas executives in a Public Service Board proceeding to determine whether the company violated board procedure by not providing timely cost updates for Phase I of the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project.

Mount Abe board mulls options, seeks input

Posted on March 12, 2015 |
By Zach Despart

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School board took its first crack at developing a new budget proposal for the Bristol school Tuesday evening after voters in the five-town area rejected the initial draft on Town Meeting Day.

While board members did not decide whether to create a budget that is more or less expensive than the original spending plan, they did decide to solicit input from voters and staff to help make up their minds.

Bristol School Board wants voter feedback on school spending

BRISTOL — Three-dozen parents, teachers and community members packed the Bristol Elementary School library Monday evening to give their input to the school board on how it should draft a new budget proposal.

But board members did not discuss spending numbers that could appear in that proposal or set a date for citizens to vote on it.

Voters on Town Meeting Day rejected the original spending plan, which totaled $4.93 million, by a tally of 377 to 267.

Rep. Sharpe pushes change in education through H.361

Sharpe at town mtg.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — Rep. David Sharpe doesn’t give off the aura of a salesman. His elbow-patched blazers may echo Willy Loman, but the soft-spoken, veteran legislator isn’t in the business of sweet-talking his way to a few bucks.

But however unnatural it may come to him, selling was exactly what Sharpe set out to do at town meetings in his district this week. It’s not goods the Bristol Democrat is hawking, but an education bill that would drastically change the organization of Vermont’s schools and alter how they are governed.

Monkton opts to move town meeting; keeps voice votes

Posted on March 5, 2015 |
By Zach Despart

MONKTON — Monkton residents took a stand for what they called the town’s democratic traditions in two ways: one, by moving the date of their town meeting in hopes of drawing more people; and two, by voting down two articles that would have changed the method of deciding several articles from voice vote to Australian ballot.

A proposed article on this year’s warning would have moved the date and time of the annual meeting from 10 a.m. on Town Meeting Day, to 7 p.m. the evening before.
