Local attorney presents distracted driving dangers to students

BRISTOL — “How many of your friends drive distracted?” Emily Joselson asked the juniors and seniors assembled in the Mount Abraham Union High School auditorium Monday morning.

A few brave hands rose at first, then scores more, until half of the students thrust a hand into the air.

“What are some examples of distracted driving?” Joselson pressed.

Bristol board takes annual road tour

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard took its annual tour of the town’s roads April 29, examining local infrastructure and ordering repairs.

Over the course of three hours the selectboard examined a number of town thoroughfares, including Prince Lane, South Street, Basin Street, Route 116, High Street, Mountain Terrace, Mountain Street, Pine Street, North Street, Plank Road, Upper Notch Road and Pumphouse Road.

New Haven fills town positions

NEW HAVEN — The New Haven selectboard at its April 1 meeting appointed a slew of residents to town positions.

The selectboard unanimously made the following appointments: Rick Shappy, town energy coordinator; Earl Bessette, John McKinley and Paul Audy as fence viewers; Phyllis Smith, representative to the Addison County Solid Waste District; Richard Higbee, inspector of lumber, shingles and wood and weigher of coal; Michaela Granstrom as library trustee; and Dave Wetmore, 911 coordinator.

White House official to talk climate at Middlebury College on Friday

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Congressional delegation will host a White House cabinet official at Middlebury College on Friday.

U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz will join Sens. Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders and Rep. Peter Welch for a panel on energy efficiency, renewable energy and climate change.

The panel will be held at the McCullough Student Center at 10 a.m., and will be followed by a question and answer session. The event is open to the public.

Lincoln hires firm to retool its website

LINCOLN — The Lincoln selectboard on April 29 hired a firm to revamp the town’s website, discussed the aftermath of mud season and heard concerns about speeding all-terrain vehicles in town.

The selectboard unanimously approved a quote by B Mighty Two, a Lincoln-based company that helps small businesses with their web presence, to help with the town’s website. For $125 per month, or $1,250 per year if paid in a lump sum, the firm will retool and manage the town website — lincolnvermont.org.

ANwSU towns to cast ballots on lower VUHS budget

VERGENNES — Residents of the five towns in the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union will head to the polls on Tuesday to vote for the second time on a budget for Vergennes Union High School.

In the first vote, on Town Meeting Day, voters rejected a 2014-2015 spending proposal of $9.73 million by a tally of 961-747. A majority of voters in each of ANwSU’s towns voted “no.”

Common Ground Center marks two decades

STARKSBORO — Tucked away in the rolling hills and babbling brooks of Starksboro is one of Addison County’s better-kept secrets — but Jim Mendell doesn’t want it to stay that way.

Mendell and his wife, Peg Kamens, are co-founders of the Common Ground Center, a family recreation retreat on a sprawling 700-acre parcel that straddles the towns of Starksboro and Monkton. Since 1994, the nonprofit has hosted children’s camps, family retreats, private parties and school groups.

We like to give Canada a hard time. The excessive politeness. The accent. The fact that if all the moose in the country formed a city, it would be the fourth most populous in all of Canada. Things like that.

I’ve been to Canada a half-dozen times, and recently spent four days in Toronto — my girlfriend was going to an international studies conference, and I tagged along for fun.

Vermont Gas proposal could seal pipeline records

BURLINGTON — Vermont Gas Systems has asked the Public Service Board to approve a protective agreement the company brokered with the Public Service Department, which would limit the public’s access to documents related to Phase II of the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project.

Vermont Gas silent on Monkton land buy

MONKTON — Vermont Gas Systems has purchased 53 acres of land in Monkton, but will neither disclose the reason for the purchase nor say what the land will be used for.

The $185,000 the South Burlington company spent to purchase the Rotax Road parcel from George Bailey on Feb. 12 will ultimately be paid by ratepayers. Vermont Gas’ rates are regulated by the state Public Service Board.
