NEW HAVEN — The Addison County Fair and Field Days ended on a somber note Saturday evening when an elderly man was crushed by a wheel that detached from a tractor and flew into the crowd during the tractor pull.

Witnesses say as the tractor neared the end of the track, the left wheel broke away from the vehicle and rolled toward the crowd. The wheel struck a barrier made of cable and concrete, jumped about 10 feet in the air and landed on the elderly man, who has not been identified to the media.

MONKTON — After more than two years on hiatus, Monkton First Response is back in business.

The organization, founded in 1976 to provide emergency medical care to the northern Addison County town, lost its certification in 2011 due to dwindling membership. This year, Bob and Kelly Howard resurrected the rescue squad and in January began serving the town of 2,000 people.

“We started running again around Jan. 1,” Bob Howard said.

BRISTOL — Crews have begun construction on a number of improvements to Prince Lane in the heart of Bristol. Project administrator Carol Wells said the work will make the area safer for motorists and pedestrians, as well as improve the downtown aesthetics.

“The impetus of the project was to improve appearances, taking down all the ugly wires and poles, screening in the dumpsters, and mainly to provide safe access to pedestrians,” Wells said.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In what he said is a victory for consumers, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., has authored legislation that will allow Americans to switch wireless carriers while keeping their cell phone or tablet.

The process, known as “unlocking,” affords consumers more freedom to choose the wireless carrier and mobile device that best suits them.

On Friday, President Obama signed the legislation, formally titled the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act.
