Vermont seniors benefit from spectrum of services; Green Mountain state wins national award

MIDDLEBURY — Diane Whitney, 70, worked in health care for 26 years before retiring a couple of years ago and moving into the Middlebury Commons.

“My body is (still) not used to the down time,” she said with a laugh.

Art Gibb Award winner draws attention to environmental challenges

MIDDLEBURY — Facing President Donald Trump’s agressive agenda against environmental policies, it’s fitting the Vermont Natural Resources Council honored  Ripton resident Warren King for his lifetime of environmental stewardship this past Thursday.

King, whose career has spanned the globe, now heralds action at the local level as the best course under the current administration.

Bandaloop awes audiences

MIDDLEBURY — When Mark Stuver entered Middlebury College as a student in 1993, he wasn’t expecting to become a professional dancer. He wanted to study geography.

But Penny Campbell, Senior Lecturer of Dance at the college and Stuver’s first mentor, insisted he continue his journey in dance.

“She took my arm, she looked me in the eye, and she said, ‘you need this,’” Stuver told a small audience at his career talk last Friday at the Mahaney Center for the Arts.

Climate opportunity: Initiative seeks creative innovations in new economy

MIDDLEBURY — How does a community position itself to reap the benefits of the new climate economy? That was the core question about 75-100 Middlebury-area residents grappled with Monday afternoon and evening at the kick-off of the Greater Middlebury Climate Economy Initiative — a series of community forums and task forces that will work over the next couple of years to make progress toward a handful of community goals.

The Vermont Council on Rural Development (VCRD), partnering with Green Mountain Power and Efficiency Vermont, sponsored the Middlebury event.

Successful Middlebury film festival excites viewers, filmmakers

MIDDLEBURY — With the awarding of 13 fuzzy, well-groomed teddy bears, the third annual Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival closed its curtains on Aug. 27, concluding what festival organizers said was the best year ever.

MNFF Artistic Director Jay Craven reported that this year’s festival featured the largest number of films screened (96), the most filmmakers to attend (over 40), and a record number of special guests. That the festival also attracted bigger audiences with high engagement also gave this year’s festival high marks.

Globe reporter tells how his Boston crime boss story made it to film

MIDDLEBURY — The third annual Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival continued its tradition of inviting special guests to talk about their experiences and accomplishments in filmmaking and beyond.

One of the guests this year, Dick Lehr, is a prominent author, journalist and screenwriter based in Boston. Lehr is co-author of “Black Mass: Whitey Bulger, the FBI, and a Devil’s Deal,” which became the basis for the 2015 film “Black Mass,” which starred Johnny Depp as the notorious crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger.

Middlebury festival gives diverse filmmakers chances to reach new people

Documentary filmmaker Thomas Bena had just finished writing an email to Dick Lehr, the former Boston Globe investigative reporter, when I recognized him in Carol’s Hungry Mind Café on Saturday afternoon. I remembered him from that day’s earlier screening of “Nashville.” I quickly did some research on my phone and, as a rookie reporter and aspiring filmmaker, and engaged him in a conversation.

MIDDLEBURY — “I think this is the best audience we’ve ever had!” said Joan Kron after the screening of her film “Take My Nose… Please,” a documentary about plastic surgery and comedy. The 89-year-old, first-time filmmaker’s work sparked non-stop applause and laughter in the crowd, who gathered in the Town Hall Theater on Aug. 24 for the Opening Night of this year’s Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival.

Students curate exhibit for Spanish School's centennial

With a freshly painted yellow wall and mounted artworks, Middlebury College’s Center Gallery, likely more commonly seen as a hallway, has been transformed into an elegant art exhibition curated by student interns at the College Museum of Art. On Aug. 3, the space was filled with lively Spanish music and animated conversations, as the exhibit “From Madrid to Midd: Zarzuelas at the Spanish School” officially opened.
