Middlebury students pitch divestment plan to trustees

MIDDLEBURY — Following months of charged discussion among students and administrators about the possibility of divesting the college’s endowment from fossil fuels and weapons companies, seven students presented the case for divestment at the February board of trustees meeting this past Saturday. No decisions were made, but officials lauded the students for their presentation.

Bristol puts new police HQ on the ballot

BRISTOL — The voters of the Bristol Police Department Special Service District will be asked to consider a 6.4 percent spending increase on Town Meeting Day that will, among other things, fund moving the department’s headquarters from its current location on South Street.

Dancers draw attention to domestic violence

MIDDLEBURY — Those who happened past the Middlebury town green at noon on Valentine’s Day may have noticed an unusual sight: around 30 women holding signs, dancing, singing and speaking out. It was part of One Billion Rising, an event hosted by WomenSafe in solidarity with gatherings around the world that day to raise awareness about violence against women.

Cold and snowy weather does not stop these two-wheeled commuters

MIDDLEBURY — Despite sub-freezing temperatures this time of year, some Vermonters are bundling up extra warmly and making their way to work without the comfort of a heated car.

For myriad reasons that include health and fitness, environmental responsibility, and financial savings, many members of the Addison County community choose to rely on bicycles as their primary form of transportation.

“It’s the way we enjoy getting around,” said Middlebury resident Rebekah Irwin, of her family’s dedication to biking.

Bristol residents raise questions about firehouse bond

BRISTOL — With the first of two bond votes slated for Town Meeting Day, public discussion about a proposed upgrade to the Bristol Fire Department’s North Street facility is beginning in earnest.

Bristol residents said there have been significant neighbor-to-neighbor conversations on the proposed major expansion of the firehouse, with some taking sides on preliminary plans that would add 10,000 square feet of space to the 116-year-old building at a cost approaching $2 million.

College squash court project is wrapping up

MIDDLEBURY — Construction of Middlebury College’s new squash facility, the first project scheduled in a major upgrade to the college’s South Main Street athletics complex, will be complete by October for the fall squash season. Phase one of construction — initial site work — started in November 2012 and was completed in December 2012. Construction will resume when phase two of the squash project begins late this month.

Monkton DRB rejects quarry proposal

MONKTON — Monkton’s Development Review Board has denied a contentious application for a 39.5-acre quarry proposed by Michael and Allan Brisson’s Brisson Stone LLC because the quarry would have extracted bedrock and crushed it for gravel, which the board said was prohibited. The quarry was to be managed by David Shlansky’s Burchfield Management Company.

Brisson Stone and Burchfield will likely appeal the Monkton DRB’s decision to the Vermont Environmental Court, Allan Brisson told the Independent in a telephone interview.

Regulators push back on Vermont Gas schedule for pipeline extension

MONTPELIER — At a pre-hearing conference last Wednesday, the Vermont Public Service Board pushed back on Vermont Gas Systems’ preferred schedule for its proposed natural gas pipeline.

The PSB told VGS that its schedule for the pipeline, which would bring Canadian natural gas through Addison County to customers in Vergennes and Middlebury and also to  International Paper in Ticonderoga, N.Y., was too aggressive.

The pipeline’s route from Chittenden County through Monkton has been the subject of heated dispute in recent weeks.

Perlee withdraws from Bristol selectboard race

BRISTOL — The number of candidates running for the Bristol selectboard dwindled to two last week. Bristol Planning Commission member Kris Perlee withdrew his petition for his candidacy on the selectboard before the ballot was finalized at 5 p.m. Wednesday, after press time for the last issue of the Independent.

“Due to possible conflicts with planning commission, other commitments, and time with my family, I do not believe this is the best time for me to run,” Perlee said on Thursday.
