College boasts talent, diversity in prospective new class

MIDDLEBURY — Describing an especially competitive applicant pool, Middlebury College officials announced early this month that the school had offered admission to 1,700 students for the incoming Class of 2017.

The college admitted students from a pool of 9,112 applicants from 77 countries and all 50 states. It was the largest group of applicants in the college’s history.

Students will choose their college by May 1. In recent years, 23 to 28 percent of the students Middlebury College has accepted have chosen to attend the school.

Bristol grandstand gets a facelift

BRISTOL — The Bristol Recreation Club is wrapping up a much-needed renovation project to its grandstand and kitchen facility just in time for the Little League baseball season.

“We thought it was going to be a minor repair project to start with,” said Eric Carter, co-director of the Rec Club. “But when we tore off the siding, we realized that five big posts that hold up the building — two of them had about two feet rotting.”

About 30 years of garbage, stuffed between cracks in the grandstand, had also accumulated.

Quest continues for improved Bristol firehouse

BRISTOL — More than 30 potential locations for a new fire facility were proposed this past Saturday at the first public gathering to discuss potential ways to expand the Bristol Fire Department’s headquarters.

After a contentious bond that would have funded a first stage of expansion to the firehouse on North Street was rejected by voters on Town Meeting Day, 587-293, town officials committed to facilitating public discussions to identify a new site.

College hosts forum for ‘fair trade recycling,’ experts seek safer handling of material

MIDDLEBURY — Consumers are used to seeing specialty stores stocked with fair trade coffee, chocolate and produce. Robin Ingenthron has added one more idea to the lexicon: fair trade recycling, a concept that’s catching on in national and international markets.

MIDDLEBURY — Every good album has a story behind it. For Addison County native Jer Coons and music partner Caroline Rose, the story of their debut album, “America Religious” — which will be released on June 11 — began with a costly mistake.

“I accidentally bought a car,” Rose explained during a recent interview in her soon-to-be adopted hometown, Middlebury.

“Caroline’s life is defined by impulsive behavior,” offered Coons.

New county daycare center supports autistic kids

NEW HAVEN — On a recent morning in a sunlit room on Rivers Bend Road in New Haven, four-year-old Brian Henderson sat on the floor and pondered his next move. A pair of mittens on a string was placed next to him and his snowsuit was half on and half off. His teacher sat on the floor beside him; after some consideration, Brian moved over to sit on her lap.
