Brandon's Memorial Day flower girl tradition goes back more than a century

BRANDON — For more than 100 years young girls have laid flowers on Memorial Day around the war memorial on Brandon’s Green. The Memorial Day service is a tradition that celebrates the sacrifices of soldiers long passed, starting not long after the Civil War and now encompassing all wars.

The history of the flower girls in Brandon, however, springs from the death of one particular soldier in the Civil War, of the grieving widow left behind, and of her effort to honor his life and to uphold ideals that are still unfulfilled.

Brandon retailer Sister Wicked keeps expanding, innovating

BRANDON — Sometimes, frustration can lead to inspiration.

Anyone who has driven through Brandon during the Route 7 construction knows how frustrating the time spent waiting for your turn to go can be. But it was a moment like that, sitting in traffic in her car near the Brandon Town Hall, that inspired Gina Germond to take a new path in her life.

The stylish woman spent more than 20 years in all aspects of retail from working in small businesses to corporate chains, from trade shows to wholesale, you name it, she had done it.

Police: Man used truck to kill woman

WHITING — Although his dream got off to a slow start, Bruce Fowler says his project, which has lofty goals, is finally getting some traction.

“It’s taken some time, had some rough patches, but we’re getting going now,” the stout ex-military man said. “I’ve been helping people and feeding people for years, but I wanted to create a place that served veterans.”

BRANDON — A new Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment has been hired for the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union. The RNESU board recently approved the hiring of Kristen Hubert, after Andy Kepes in March announced he would leave the position to become the Ferrisburgh Central School principal.

Police learn tactics at OVUHS to deal with school shooters

BRANDON — Adorned with replicas of planets in our solar system, the blue and white hallways of Otter Valley Union High School are cast in long shadows as the harsh glow of the fluorescent lighting falls on four Vermont State Police recruits. The officers in training are moving stealthily down the school’s hallways, their black uniforms in stark contrast to the usual brightness and joy of their surroundings.

Allie gets a second chance — and a new kidney

BRANDON — The final semesters of college can be very stressful. From staying up all night and cramming for finals, to worrying about post-graduation life and finding a career, many students experience varying levels of stress.

As a junior at St. Lawrence University in upstate New York, Alison “Allie” Walter began waking up with migraines and was constantly tired. She found herself struggling to accomplish basic tasks. The nurses she saw at the school dismissed her symptoms as stress, much like typical university students experience.

Brandon Town Hall gears up for an exciting season

The Brandon Town Hall has come a long way since a group of local residents, who call themselves the Friends of Town Hall, got involved two decades ago.

At that time, the 158-year-old building had fallen into disrepair and was primarily used as a dumping ground for old sewer bills.

Colonels blank Otter softball in first game

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School softball team struggled in its first game of the season against visiting Brattleboro on Saturday, when Colonel Hailey Derosia tossed a five-inning no-hitter for the Colonels. Derosia struck out 14 of the 17 batters she faced as Brattleboro defeated the Otters 15-0.

OV Co-Coach Kelly Trayah said the combination of the competition and the circumstances proved to be too much for the Otters.

Pale Horse tattoo shop leaves an impression with its body art

BRANDON — The incessant hammering of two tattoo machines assaults the senses when you open the door of Pale Horse tattoo shop in downtown Brandon. Inside the studio, two bewhiskered men go about the business of putting permanent paintings on people.

Anthony “A-Train” Hylton is working at his tattoo shop today but he soon will be opening a second Pale Horse shop in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a step towards expanding his award-winning art to new locations.
