NEW HAVEN — The rebuild of the Route 17 bridge over Otter Creek in New Haven will be complete before Addison County Fair and Field Days opens on Aug. 7, according to the Vermont Agency of Transportation’s project manager.

VTrans Project Manager Carolyn Carlson said the rebuilt bridge will be open to vehicles by Aug. 3, allowing normal traffic flow to resume before the county’s nearby popular annual fair.

Construction began on Route 17’s Bridge 8, which passes over Otter Creek between Weybridge and New Haven, in early June.

MIDDLEBURY — Two summers ago, when Georgia Grace Edwards worked 10-12 hours a day as a glacier guide on Juneau, Alaska’s Mendenhall Glacier, she quickly noticed how the work was different for her than for her male co-workers.

Edwards’ main disadvantage as one of the only female guides? Using the bathroom.

MIDDLEBURY — As an infant, Roy Sokolowski could hear the train whistles of the Long Island Railroad from his parents’ apartment. From the age of three, he shared a small Lionel Train Set with his grandfather. As he got older, Sokolowski and his family would often take vacations by car to Pennsylvania — the Poconos, Lancaster. On occasion, they would squeeze in a train-related destination like the stop at the East Broad Top Railroad in Orbisonia, Pa.

“The seed was planted,” Sokolowski said of his interest in all-things railroad.

MIDDLEBURY — You know the drill. You feel sick or notice something might not be quite right and you go to the doctor. You receive your treatment, maybe a prescription, and then you may start to feel better, or you may not.

ADDISON COUNTY — 2014 was a great year for cabbage in Vermont. Spencer Blackwell’s cabbages on Elmer Farm in Middlebury grew to be around 12 pounds each.

It was amazing to see, but he knew he wouldn’t be able to sell the especially heavy heads of greens to any of his usual markets. He ended up “turning under” two-thirds of the cabbages, not harvesting them so that the nutrients from the germinated crops could be recycled into the soil.
