County sugarmakers gear up for Vermont Maple Open House Weekend

VERMONT — The annual Vermont Maple Open House Weekend will be held at sugarhouses throughout Vermont this Saturday and Sunday. The weekend is a celebration of the maple syrup season in Vermont and an opportunity for people of all ages to visit one or more sugarhouses throughout the state to learn about maple sugaring in Vermont.

Winter manure spreading ban lifted

MONTPELIER — As a result of unusually warm and dry weather, lack of snow and projected weather forecast over the next few weeks the Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets in agreement with the Agency of Natural Resources and Vermont Association of Conservation Districts, is lifting the winter spreading ban that normally is in place until April 1st

According to Secretary Chuck Ross, “I am lifting the ban because I believe it will help farmers best manage their manure resources and is in the best interests of Vermont’s waterways.”

Mac Parker pleads in fraud case

Sen. Claire Ayer appointed to health care nominating team

MIDDLEBURY — Sen. Claire Ayer, D-Weybridge, has been named to a nine-member state panel that will vet nominees for the Green Mountain Care Board, which will help design and administer major components of a single-payer health care system for Vermont.

Gov. Peter Shumlin on Wednesday announced the members of the nine-member Green Mountain Health Care Board nominating committee. As dictated by state statute, the Governor appointed three, House Speaker Shap Smith appointed three, and Senate President Pro Tem John Campbell appointed three.
