First in a two-part series

MIDDLEBURY — In the late 1980s, as Mikhail Gorbachev led the Soviet Union through a series of major political reforms known as glasnost (sometimes translated as “openness”) newspapers across the United States began reporting on a burgeoning diplomatic effort that, if successful, could signal a change in the course of the Cold War.

“Unprecedented,” reported the Associated Press.

A “radical departure,” said The New York Times.

How low will it go? Primary turnout a factor in competitive races

ADDISON COUNTY — Every vote counts — especially when there are very few of them.

Most signs point to that being the case in the Tuesday, Aug. 14 gubernatorial primary elections, which have been characterized by low fundraising among all candidates — including by incumbent Governor Phil Scott.

MIDDLEBURY — On a recent afternoon, Rebekah Irwin hefted a massive tome out of a display case on the bottom floor of Middlebury College’s Davis Family Library and hiked open its heavy calfskin cover. Though you wouldn’t know it from the outside, the interior reveals page after page of spectacular, colorful illustrations — a marvel, given that the ink was laid more than 500 years ago.

MIDDLEBURY — As president of Middlebury College, Laurie Patton’s community work is guided by three principles. Or four, if you count the cauliflower principle.

“The cauliflower principle,” she said in an interview last week, “is that when I go to the store to get cauliflower, I have to be prepared for people to say hello, ask me what’s going on on some particular topic, and comment on what I’m buying.”

NEW HAVEN — The bleachers were almost full at the animal show arena at Addison County Fair & Field Days as several 4-H kids led their cows inside for conformation classes, angling for a wide range of possible awards.

Large as that audience may have been, the 4-H-ers were mostly aiming to impress the person whose opinion counted most: dairy judge Elizabeth Hall of East Montpelier.

Stunt biker wows Field Days crowd

NEW HAVEN — Robbie Pfunder is not a fan of flinching.

For the bike stuntman, who wowed a crowd of fairgoers at the Addison County Fair & Field Days last Tuesday, every inch, and every flinch, matters — especially when kids are involved.

During one of Pfunder’s most impressive feats, audience volunteers Oscar and Maya formed a human high-bar, holding a cord roughly 40 inches in the air for Pfunder to hop over with his bike. As the audience held its breath, Pfunder completed the leap — and both kids jumped back.

Bears humans learn to coexist cmyj.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Bears aren’t the problem — you are.

This was the gist of the presentation given Wednesday evening by Forrest Hammond, a bear biologist for Vermont Fish & Wildlife, to a crowd of locals concerned by the spate of recent bear sightings around the area. About 70 people crowded the Middlebury Town Offices for the talk, which covered the biology and behavior of the Eastern black bears that call Addison County home — and what we can do to mitigate their encroachment into our backyards.
