Middlebury Foods continues to deliver for local hungry families

ADDISON COUNTY — In January of 2013, five Middlebury College sophomores began to lay the foundation for a small nonprofit known as Middlebury Foods. Originally inspired by a Chicago company called Box Top Foods, Middlebury Foods would work to combat food insecurity in Addison County by selling “supermarket-quality food at fast food prices.”

Using solely volunteer labor, Middlebury Foods since then has provided low-income and middle-class families with monthly deliveries of fresh food at convenient and community-oriented locations across the county.

Addison County's disaster response team working hard, seeking members

ADDISON COUNTY — More than a year since its founding, the Addison County Red Cross Disaster Team is looking to expand its cohort of volunteers.

A local chapter of the Vermont Red Cross, the team is currently a group of four local volunteers who help residents of Addison County in the event of a disaster. They meet once a month at the Middlebury Fire Department on Seymour Street, with the support of the fire department and Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley.

Team coordinator Jill Stackhouse said the Red Cross does more than people realize.

Salisbury church to host Middlebury composer's opus

SALISBURY — Composer Sam Guarnaccia of Middlebury met Celtic spirituality theologian Philip Newell at a retreat in Vermont in 2005. Guarnaccia had been improvising music with a Scottish friend and he found that Newell was writing words that might work with a piece with a flavor of the Celtic countries.

The two decided to collaborate, and Guarnaccia set out to create the music that would accompany Newell’s writing.

Roger's massage therapy clinic goes full-time

New recycling rules take effect this week

ADDISON COUNTY — Beginning this Wednesday, all residents of Vermont will be required to recycle metal, glass, plastic, paper and cardboard refuse in compliance with state’s Universal Recycling Law.

The law, also known as Act 148, is designed to greatly reduce Vermont’s levels of solid waste by phasing in bans on recyclables, leaf and yard debris, and food scraps from the landfill by the year 2020. The first phase of the law only prohibits the disposal of mandated recyclables.

MIDDLEBURY — Under the first tent of the Middlebury Farmers’ Market in the Marble Works District, one Shoreham family has used unconventional ingredients to transform typical baked goods into vegan, gluten-free treats.

Migraines inform artwork in Bixby exhibit

VERGENNES — Starting this week, the Bixby Memorial Library in Vergennes will house a new exhibit from Vanessa Hampton, a Panton-based artist who uses her work to educate viewers on the experience of migraine attacks and their potential medical implications.

Hampton is the first of four artists featured at the Bixby as part of the Vergennes art walk, which take place on the fourth Friday of every month from June through September.
