BRANDON — The Brandon Development Review Board has denied an application for a 56,000-square-foot shopping market plaza roughly a mile south of downtown, but has approved a scaled-down version of the project.

The board voted unanimously in its decision to deny the Act 250 application filed by developer Bill McCabe to build a 36,000-square-foot Hannaford supermarket, a 12,000-square-foot line of smaller stores, and a 5,000-square-foot standalone outbuilding, plus a 295-space parking lot.

Graduates rule O.V. 'House of Noise'

BRANDON — There was some pretty deep thinking going on in Brandon this past Saturday morning. Valedictorian Jack Markoski should consider a career in philosophy instead of psychology after his speech to 102 fellow classmates at the Otter Valley Union High School 2010 graduation ceremony.

Markoski evoked Kerouac, Thoreau and J.R.R. Tolkien as he urged his peers not to be complacent, to wander, to explore, to dream, and to use their imaginations.

BRANDON — Observing Sue LaRock, Julie Fox and Jean Childers is like watching a sweet, hilarious, feel-good film.

The three woman, who count each other as friends as well as co-workers, have each decided to retire from their jobs at the Neshobe School in Brandon after a combined 68 1/2 years, and it is definitely with mixed feelings.

“We’re leaving stuff we love everyday,” said Childers earnestly. “To me, it doesn’t get any better than the last 20 years.”

“It is with very, very mixed emotions,” LaRock said, adding with her trademark wit, “But I’m old and tired.”

By Lee J. Kahrs and Kathryn Flagg

BRIDPORT/BRANDON — Administrators at Bridport Central School and Otter Valley Union High School breathed a collective sigh of relief on Tuesday after the Vermont Department of Education removed the schools from a list of Vermont’s 10 persistently lowest achieving schools.

The schools were initially tagged for the list in a memo released last week, but state education officials on Tuesday said “human error” meant that two of the identified schools — Bridport and OV — were mistakenly included.
