Longtime Independent readers may have noticed a new byline thrown in with the usual suspects these past few weeks. Along with being the lucky winter intern for the voice of Addison County, I am the sophomore right fielder on the Middlebury Panthers baseball team. Mother Nature’s lackadaisical winter has gotten me thinking about baseball early this year and led me to ponder how we can improve on last year’s abysmal attendance.

MIDDLEBURY — In 1996, Robert Gold was blind sided by oncoming pickup truck as he sat at an intersection in Manchester, N.H. The accident left him with traumatic brain injuries that ended his lucrative dental practice and drove friends and family away.

But the accident gave Gold, now a Middlebury resident, a second life as a self-taught artist. Although he can no longer wield the tools of his former trade, Gold has turned to a vocation where he combines photography and painting to create works of beauty in a unique style.

MIDDLEBURY — After an unprecedented $141,333.45 of dorm damage in the 2010-11 academic year, the College saw a 44.5 percent decrease during the first semester of the current academic year.

According to data released by Assistant Director of Custodial Services Linda Ross, there was a total of $21,605.03 of damage this past fall semester. Comparatively, the College suffered $48,550.629 during the fall of 2010.

Ross, a Middlebury resident, attributed the turnaround to this year’s first-year class and a “phenomenal” residential life staff.
