Pilot constructs own plane from scratch

NEW HAVEN — Tyler McGuire set about an adventure to build his own airplane in exactly the manner one might expect a 20-year-old college student to do: He jumped in headfirst.

The New Haven resident was holed up at college in Florida with his friend Abe Nehemias when the two aerospace engineering students considered the notion to build a functional airplane from a partially manufactured kit.

Mount Abe fights poor state ranking

Posted on April 1, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — Administrators and some community members at Mount Abraham Union High School are balking at the school’s recent appearance on a list of the state’s 10 “persistently low-achieving” schools.

The designation means Mount Abe could qualify for as much as $600,000 in federal school improvement grants, and the school board voted last week to move ahead with an application for the funding. Meanwhile, school officials have also been quick to point out that the list of low achieving schools paints an inaccurate, oversimplified picture of Mount Abe’s record of achievement.

Artist forges reputation for smithing

Posted on April 1, 2010 |

web_lincolnartguy.jpg

LINCOLN — Ask blacksmith Brian Anderson, and the South Starksboro metalworker will tell you that a cool, hard lump of iron and a soft piece of clay aren’t as different as you might think.

Sure, you may have to heat iron to 2,500 degrees before it becomes malleable — and malleable only with the force of a hammer and tongs. But at that point, he said, the distinction between hard and soft, clay and iron, all but disappears.

By Kathryn Flagg

MONKTON — Bristol resident and Williston elementary school teacher Susan Stewart will be taking the helm at Monkton Central School next year in the wake of the retirement of longtime principal Rich Jessup.

Jessup, who has worked at the elementary school for 20 years, retired on medical leave this past fall. Interim principals Richard Schattman and Edorah Frazer have led the school this year, but the Monkton school board decided to offer Stewart the full-time job as a permanent replacement at a board meeting last week.

MDs rethink blood transfusions

Posted on March 25, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRIDPORT — A team of topnotch doctors from around the world landed in Bridport at the end of February to reexamine commonly held medical beliefs about blood transfusions.

The four-day conference took place from Feb. 26 through March 1, and included doctors from as far afield as Austria and Australia. At the heart of their research is the concern that blood transfusions are risky, expensive and often unnecessary — and yet, they continue to be done frequently in American hospitals and around the world.

ADDISON COUNTY — Spring is sprung!

While warm weather this weekend may have delighted most county residents, temperatures that pushed 60 degrees in parts of the region caused a bit of consternation from local sugarmakers, many of whom worried the warm spell could signal the end to a brief maple sugaring season this year.

BRISTOL — Students from Japan are working alongside their peers at Mount Abraham Union High School this week on an ambitious cultural and environmental exchange project investigating affordable “green” housing.

The exchange was arranged by the Shoreham-based foundation Green Across the Pacific (GATP), and is taking place this week at Mount Abe, Harwood Union High School, and at various events around the state.

The Japanese group is made up of 13 high school students, two university students, and six adults (including a mix of teachers and government officials).
