ADDISON COUNTY — Tomato season has come and gone, but late blight — a fungal disease that infected many tomato and potato crops in Vermont this summer — is still on the minds of many gardeners this fall.

As farmers and gardeners put their plots to bed, they’re taking care to make sure the blight, credited with causing the Irish potato famine of the 1840s, won’t spread to next year’s crops.

ADDISON COUNTY — Earlier this week, around 300 students at Mary Hogan Elementary School in Middlebury lined up for the H1N1 influenza vaccine, as some of the first doses of the vaccine trickled into Vermont.

The clinic came after last week’s announcement from the Vermont Department of Health that H1N1, informally dubbed the “swine flu,” had reached widespread levels in the state. This increased level of illness had been slower to hit New England than other parts of the country.

Clippings: The cattle call meets the big city

Posted on October 29, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

I took off for New York earlier this month, cutting out of work a bit early on a Friday afternoon to make the trip. Almost all of my dearest college friends flocked to the city after graduation, so an outing to New York is a bit like one-stop shopping at a big-box store: Somewhere, in a city of 8 million some odd people, are a half-dozen friends waiting for me; I just have to elbow my way through never-ending aisles of strangers, knick-knacks and two-for-the-price-of-one deals to find them.

This Thursday, we’ll turn our attention to the growing market for local meats, the challenges facing smaller meat producers and slaughterhouses, and the creative solutions some farmers are exploring to make beef production more profitable.

Bristol conservationists look to protect bat habitat

Posted on October 26, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — Conservationists in Bristol are looking to protect a 194-acre parcel of land in the northwest corner of town, which they say provides a large chunk of habitat for the Indiana bat, Vermont’s only federally endangered mammal.

The parcel would also extend the scope of the Waterworks, a 664-acre park conserved in the 1990s by the Watershed Center, a Bristol non-profit that converted the land from the one-time Vergennes City reservoir into a popular recreational and wildlife refuge on Plank Street.

Bill would put medical marijuana in pharmacies

Posted on October 22, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — An Addison County lawmaker is pushing for legislation that would make it easier for approved Vermont users of medical marijuana to obtain the drug. That effort comes as the Obama administration earlier this week directed federal prosecutors not to pursue cases against drug users complying with state medical marijuana laws.

Flu activity in Vermont reaches "widespread" level

Posted on October 21, 2009 | Blog Category:
By Kathryn Flagg

An update just rolled in from the Vermont Department of Health: The department has confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza in all regions of the state, and increased levels of influenza-like illness are being reported in most regions.

Vermont will report “widespread” influenza activity for the week ending Oct. 17 to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most U.S. states (41) have already reported widespread activity levels.

That "widespread" activity was slower to hit New England than other parts of the country.

Sanders backs local foods, dairy changes

Posted on October 15, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

MIDDLEBURY — Addressing a crowd of around 50 farmers Monday night at the Middlebury American Legion, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., offered a few words of support for dairy farmers struggling to make a living: the dairy crisis isn’t a Vermont issue or a New England issue so much as a national one, and lawmakers are paying attention.
