Bristol dancer keeps the world beat

BRISTOL — Against the backdrop of a steady beat of African drums, Soriba Simbo Camara leapt and twisted, his body, contorting rhythmically to the sound. He carried a cow’s tail in one hand, a symbol of power in Guinean culture, and wore a traditional West African shirt. The dance was feverish but graceful, and at its end, Camara catapulted his body from the ground in a tremendous jump.

Camara wiped the sheen of sweat from his brow, and caught his breath.

“It keeps you young,” he said, grinning just as he had all through the dance.

College reopens debate on 51 Main

MIDDLEBURY — Administrators at Middlebury College have reopened the discussion about the fate of 51 Main at the Bridge, a college-owned restaurant and bar operating in downtown Middlebury.

51 Main hit the chopping block last year, when the college first began looking at serious budget cuts. Officials gave the lounge roughly a year to sink or swim, with the provision that the bar must show at least two consecutive months in the black to stay in operation.

BRISTOL — “Fire at will!” shouted Mount Abraham Union High School physics teacher Tom Tailer, raising his air horn high above his head and sounding the start of the war games with a loud blast.

Decked out in a cap and vest, the cuffs of his pants tucked into his boots, Tailer looked the part of the army commander he played last Thursday. At his signal, the battlefield outside of the Bristol high school erupted into a melee.

MIDDLEBURY — Outside of the Middlebury American Legion post on Boardman Street, people began lining up as early as 8 a.m. on Tuesday for the state’s first public H1N1 vaccine clinic, which drew hundreds from all over Vermont to Middlebury in search of the vaccine.

But at least 150 people were left out in the rain when the clinic — armed with just 300 doses of the H1N1, or “swine flu,” vaccine — swiftly ran out of the product. Between 450 and 500 people were estimated to have turned out for the event, some coming from as far away as Montreal.

MIDDLEBURY — The newest addition to Middlebury’s health care community isn’t rolling out the latest technology or advanced batteries of tests. In fact, in the case of Partners in Palliative and Home Care — the practice launched by two Middlebury-area doctors this fall — a new approach to medicine looks remarkably old-fashioned.

BRISTOL — At their Tuesday evening meeting, members of the Mount Abraham Union High School board of directors edged toward this winter’s discussion of the 2010-2011 school year budget.

The board at its Oct. 20 meeting charged the high school’s administration with keeping educational spending at the same level as last year — $11,160,648 — as a target for the coming year.

This week, the board looked over a long-range facilities plan prepared by Facilities Manager Reg Wedge, as well as a draft plan of the school’s technology spending for the next two years.
