Bristol voters back Holley Hall repairs

BRISTOL — Bristol voters by a margin of 133 to 75 voted on Tuesday to approve a bond of up to $750,000 to repair Holley Hall.

The 208 voters who turned out for the special vote represented a little less than 8 percent of the town’s voter checklist. While selectboard Chair Carol Wells said the turnout was disappointing, she was pleased with the outcome of the vote.

“Obviously, I’m excited that it passed,” Wells said. “Now we can move on to the next phase of finalizing the plan and trying to get the best bid possible and start securing other funds to reduce the bond.”

'Farm to Plate' plan on table at food summit

By Kathryn Flagg

MIDDLEBURY — Again and again on Tuesday, participants at an Addison County “farm to plate” summit pointed to the biggest roadblock impinging the expansion of a local foods movement in Vermont: the infrastructure for aggregating, processing and distributing locally grown food is all but nonexistent.

H1N1 cases beginning to dwindle

ADDISON COUNTY — The hospital and doctors’ offices in Addison County are enjoying the calm after the storm, after the number of cases of the H1N1 “swine” flu has reportedly tapered off over the last two weeks.

Vermont Health Commissioner Wendy Davis last week said the swine flu outbreak appeared to be waning in the state, though she warned that the illness could return in another wave and urged “high risk” patients to get vaccinated.

Still, the flu virus is keeping county healthcare providers — especially family practices and pediatricians’ offices — plenty busy.

Middlebury selectmen consider budget cuts

Posted on December 10, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectmen on Tuesday said they will explore more cuts, freezing staff vacancies and using a fund balance in order to trim another $106,905 from a draft fiscal year 2011 spending that would allow Middlebury to maintain the same municipal property tax rate next year.

It would be the second year in a row that Middlebury residents would be offered a budget to maintain the same municipal tax rate, which currently stands at 80.91 cents. The chore is being rendered a little more difficult this year, for two main reasons.

Lincoln auditor resigns post, runs for selectboard

By Kathryn Flagg

LINCOLN — A Lincoln auditor has resigned his post, and citing frustration with the way business is done in town is throwing his cap into the ring for the March 2010 race for a three-year term on the selectboard.

Elwin Isham was elected to serve as an auditor on Town Meeting Day this year. But now, because of his decision to run for the selectboard, Isham said he’s resigning his post to avoid any potential conflict of interest.

Monkton drafts plans for new town building

Posted on December 10, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

MONKTON — After fits and starts that have spanned years, Monkton planners are eyeing a preliminary design for the possible construction of new town offices.

The Municipal Building Committee, a study group formed by the Monkton selectboard, hosted a public meeting last Thursday that unveiled early plans drawn up by the Bread Loaf Corp. If the selectboard decides to move forward with those plans, the town could see a bond vote for the project as early as Town Meeting Day.

Bristol to vote on Holley Hall repairs

Posted on December 7, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — Bristol voters this week will consider the second of two large bond votes in recent months when they take to the polls Tuesday to weigh a $750,000 bond to fund Holley Hall repairs and renovations.

The vote comes after voters on Aug. 25 agreed 142 to 87 to move forward with a $1.5 million stormwater system upgrade.

The Holley Hall improvements would focus on making the building more handicap accessible, fixing structural and wiring problems, adding insulation and reorganizing the basement town offices.

Mt. Abe paves new paths to graduation

BRISTOL — Imagine a high school curriculum that takes a science lesson out of the lab and into nearby fields and forests, or an art class that requires students to take photos in their communities rather than in a classroom studio. Consider a physics unit that does away with textbooks in favor of rebuilding a car’s engine, or a music lesson that requires a student to build an instrument in addition to playing one.

Shelter expands focus on transitional housing

BRISTOL — The John Graham Emergency Shelter on Monday closed a deal for a $198,000 home in Bristol, which the Vergennes-based homeless shelter intends to covert into three units of transitional housing.

The deal comes at a time of rising demand for the homeless shelter’s services. It marks a ratcheting up of the organization’s efforts to use transitional housing to give families and individuals a place to get back on their feet while they hunt for a permanent residence that is away from the hubbub of the shelter but under the umbrella of a support system.

Mt. Abe board aims to level-fund school budget

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School board of directors Tuesday continued taking tentative steps toward a draft spending plan that reflects a zero-percent increase in educational spending — a goal that board chair Lanny Smith said leaves the board “between a rock and a hard place.”

“We don’t have anything left to cut,” said Smith.

Last year, voters in the five towns that feed into Mount Abe approved a roughly $12.8 million spending plan, down just less than 1 percent from spending in 2007-2008.
