BRISTOL — By a nearly two-to-one margin, Bristol residents this week sent a crystal clear message to the town’s planning commission: It’s time to head back to the drawing board when it comes to the contentious town plan and gravel extraction zoning ordinance.

That message had been broadcast by a few vocal town residents at a series of public meetings and hearings over the past year, but those opponents were joined on Tuesday at the polls by hundreds of supporters. The town plan fell, 364 for to 598 against, and the extraction ordinance toppled in a 349 to 627 vote.

NEW HAVEN — Stepping into his new position as the commander at the Vermont State Police barracks in New Haven last week, Lt. Gary Genova’s career came full circle.

The 47-year-old began his career with the VSP more than 20 years ago at the former Middlebury barracks just down the road. An Addison County resident, Genova said he’s pleased to return to the barracks where his career with the state police started, and looks forward to reviving his partnerships with longstanding public safety officials in the region.

Winter of wacky weather takes toll

ADDISON COUNTY — Finally!

That’s what many in the area said when they woke up Wednesday morning to the first real snow storm in Addison County in more than a month.

Those looking for a scapegoat when it comes to the relative lack of snow this February can just blame the jet stream, a fast flowing, narrow air current that moves from west to east, and influences much of North America’s weather patterns.

Nonprofit seeks immortality through technology

BRISTOL — There’s a saying that, once something exists online, it can’t be destroyed. A photograph posted to a Facebook account is logged in search records and Internet caches. Pull it down, if you like, but know that a digital copy is probably pinging around in the ether, like it or not.

In a sense, that information is immortal.

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center is making slow and steady progress toward a massive $4.4 million project to bring the hospital’s information system and medical records into the 21st century.

Though the finished project is still more than two years out and the hospital is waiting on state approval to move forward, hospital administrators are confident that the new information technology could improve the quality of care at the hospital.

Middlebury senior home closing

MIDDLEBURY — After 25 years in the senior care business, the owners of Addison House announced last week that they’re shutting the doors to the College Street community care facility.

Owners Sharon Thompson, Barbara O’Hehir and Marcia Wheeler notified the home’s staff and residents last week that the facility would be shutting down in 90 days. They’ve been gearing up to close for a year, Thompson said, but wanted to take the transition slowly to affect the fewest residents possible.

Addison House is home to seven residents, down from a high of 17.

Ag chief: consensus needed for dairy reform

BURLINGTON — In the first visit from the head of the U.S. Department of Agriculture to Vermont in 20 years, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack last weekend told Vermont’s struggling dairy farmers that changes in their industry are overdue, but that any reforms will need to come from farmers, not Washington.

The visit came at the end of what has been the hardest year in recent memory for Vermont farmers, who have been selling milk below the cost of production and taking out enormous loans to keep their farms in business.

Bristol to begin upgrading storm drainage

BRISTOL — Bristol selectmen have signed bond papers and notes that gave the final go-ahead to a $1.38 million stormwater system improvement project in the village.

The project will replace waterlines from South Street to the Bristol Elementary School and the old clay tiles that made up the storm sewer in that part of the village. The project also calls for replacing the roadway from curb to curb along North Street.

SOUTH STARKSBORO — For the 11 years Christine Chaloux has lived in her remote South Starksboro home, she’s relied on fuel from three large kerosene tanks to keep her warm through the winter. Her steep driveway is all but impassable at this time of year, so her fuel arrives before snow flies, and then the 46-year-old woman keeps one eye on the thermostat and the other on her fuel tanks.

Restocking on fuel part way through the season just isn’t possible, Chaloux explains, practically or financially speaking.
