'A gentle trinitarian mysticism'

You know, it’s not always easy being the “baseball guy” at one of the nation’s top institutions of learning.

But it’s easier now than it used to be. Cultural Studies are acknowledged as an important part of higher education. Popular culture, sports, movies and the like are now in liberal arts curricula.

The phrase, “A Gentle Trinitarian Mysticism,” comes from an essay on baseball by the Catholic philosopher and prolific writer, Michael Novak, in his book, “The Joy of Sports.”

Father/son: 'How 'bout those Sox?'

Posted on March 18, 2010 |
By Karl Lindholm

It wasn’t until last year, when he was 97, that I told my dad to his face that I loved him.

It was an awkward declaration, and I don’t remember his response. He might have said he loved me, too. It really didn’t matter what he said: I knew he loved me. And I have no doubt he knew that I loved him, too.

Instead of saying “I love you,” we would say to each other, “How ‘bout those Red Sox?” For my dad and me, sports were the medium of our sharing.

Down at one end of the gym at Middlebury College, assistant basketball coach Russ Reilly is drilling the Panther big men, Andrew Locke, 6’10”, and Ryan Sharry, 6’8”, and their teammates Jamal Davis 6’6”, Peter Lynch, 6’6”, and Bill Greven, 6’5”, working on moves around the hoop, jump shots, and baseline drives.

Tiger Woods' fall from grace: a lost hero

Posted on December 30, 2009 |
By Karl Lindholm

I have a neighbor, an avid golfer, who a couple of years ago had the opportunity to play Augusta National Golf Club, and was absolutely thrilled. He would play on the course where the Masters Golf Tournament is held each April, the Valhalla, or Eden, of golf courses, sacred ground, where the immortal gods of golf have trod and reside.

I didn’t dare to tell him that you couldn’t pay me to set foot on Augusta National.

Love the game, but can't play

Posted on December 3, 2009 |

It’s hard to sit on the bench in any sport. I know this from personal experience, though some time ago.

It’s especially hard in basketball, it seems to me. There are so few players — only five can play at any one time, and then there’s the tyranny of the clock: only 32 minutes to be parceled out in high school games, 40 in college.

At Middlebury College, two of the best players on this year’s talented team (5-0 so far, with two more home games this week), Kevin Kelleher and Ashton Coghlan, are sitting on the bench and haven’t played a minute this season.

Retirement: Hang on or hang 'em up?

Our favorite athletes are shooting stars. Young at 25, over the hill at 30, their prime years are brief. For the rest of us, it only seems so, as we look back.

Most athletes retire involuntarily and prematurely at 18 or 22, when their school days are over. They have to reinvent themselves, forge new identities, figure out who they are in order to remain relevant and alive.

Sox may win with motley 'deputation'

Posted on October 8, 2009 |
By Karl Lindholm

Watching the red Sox most nights this summer, I have concluded that they really are an “Anacharsis Clootz Deputation.”

Come to think about it, all sports teams are Anacharsis Clootz Deputations, more or less.
What in the world is an Anacharsis Clootz Deputation?

That’s how Herman Melville in “Moby Dick” described the multicultural crew on the ship, the Pequod: they were “from all the isles of the sea, and all the ends of the earth.”

It basically means a motley crew, in our everyday lexicon. Mostly, I like to say it: “Anacharsis Clootz Deputation.”

Of fathers, sons and their coaches

My son Peter is 14 and in the ninth grade. He has decided to play football this year on the Middlebury Union High School freshman team. I hope he’s a better player than I was.

My dad, Peter’s Granpa, was a genuinely good football player, captain of the 1934 Bates College team, when football was king on college campuses and players were Big Men on Campus. He is a member of the Maine State Football Hall of Fame, among other gridiron honors, and still attends Bates’ games in the fall, at age 98, when the weather allows. He loved the hurly-burly of the game.

Legacy of a coach, husband and fisherman

Posted on August 6, 2009 |

It was a surprise when my sister married the football coach in 1969, given the gadabouts in her life before Jim. She was living and working as a photographer in Cambridge, Mass., a haven for rebels, radicals and rascals of all shapes and sizes at that strange time. Jim was coaching football at Harvard when they met and he was fishing a lot. All he had to his name were an old Land Rover and two canoes.
