“There are two good reasons to live in Vermont,” I often tell people: “May — and October.”

(Conversely the reasons not to live here — “March and November!”)

How about this! The Red Sox and the Dodgers in the World Series.

Pretty cool.

Two of the game’s oldest and most storied clubs squaring off: Brooklyn joined the National League in 1890 and Boston played in the inaugural American League season of 1901.

They weren’t known as the “Dodgers” and “Red Sox” in their early days, but simply the “Brooklyn Nationals” and the “Boston Americans.” The Red Sox became the Red Sox in 1907, and the Dodgers not officially until after the 1918 season.

Karl Lindholm: What's in a name — a championship?

Mookie Betts.

What kind of name is that, for a grown-up? Or a big league ball player?

Sounds like a character in a kids’ book, or a cartoon figure. Who’s next — Pippi Longstocking, Wile E. Coyote?

“Mookie Betts” indeed. Best Red Sox name since Coco Crisp.

When he comes up to the plate as the lead-off hitter for the Red Sox, you’re justified in asking, “Who’s that high school kid?”

Imagine this baseball game:

The first batter of the game walks on four pitches. The pitcher who issued the walk is outraged by the umpire’s calls. They exchange words and the pitcher charges the plate and punches the umpire in the face, whereupon he is summarily ejected from the game.

Column by Karl 8 02 18 One Goal Lewiston.jpg

Ever been to Lewiston, Maine? Maybe to visit Bates College.

Lewiston is the second largest city in Maine — not Augusta, the capital, or Bangor in the north. 36,000 people live in Lewiston and another 23,000 reside in Auburn just across the bridge over the Androscoggin River.

That’s my hometown, Lewiston, where I grew up and why in some considerable measure I am who I am.

Karl Lindholm: A most unforgettable character: Coach Alaimo

In the middle of a practice scrimmage, the coach blew a shrill whistle and gathered his minions around him at mid-court. He exhorted his boys to play with greater abandon: “Every loose ball has to be ours. Get on the floor!”

He then instructed one of us with a ball (it might have been me!) to roll it on the floor and he proceeded to demonstrate. He dove on the rolling basketball … and broke his wrist.

Who’s that tall slender fellow in the Red Sox hat?

Why, it’s Bill McKibben of Ripton, the environmental activist and writer, back home after five weeks in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the Pacific Islands, Canada and California, fighting coal mines and working for fossil fuel divestment.

Bill McKibben, baseball fan.

Karl Lindholm: Many pitchers could, and can, also wield bats

By the way, who decreed that pitchers can’t hit?

From little League through high school, the most athletic player is often the pitcher — and the best hitter, batting cleanup.

Yet at the professional level, and even in college baseball, pitchers are relegated to specialist duty, never carrying a bat to the plate and taking their licks. Pitchers sit while a designated player hits in their turn.

In the Major Leagues, the National League is the outlier, still allowing pitchers to hit for themselves (most often ineptly).

Karl Lindholm: San Antonio and all that hoopla!

It was a giant basketball party, a fiesta de hoop: just so much hoopla in San Antonio the weekend before last — March Madness, the Final Four:

And we were there.

This was the second trip to the Final Four for the four of us, a reprise of an Atlanta adventure in 2013 when we witnessed Louisville defeat Michigan in the national championship game in a cavernous football stadium, the Georgia Dome, along with 70,000 of our closest friends.

Lindholm, Karl ONLINE.jpg

I am playful when I ski (and I rarely am in everyday life). I sing when I ski — the tune dictates my speed and rhythm.

I feel weightless in heavy boots and skis attached — and heavy winter clothing covering my whole body. I almost fly when I ski.
