Clippings: Romney not just one of the guys

Knowing that presidential candidate Mitt Romney would release his income tax returns this week, I was prepared to write a column pointing out that the Massachusetts Republican was not one of us. We all knew he was rich, but how rich?

Then I saw the numbers and it gave me pause. Sure, “Willard” (as it says on his 1040 tax return) Romney is a millionaire several times over. But the numbers I’m talking about are the ones provided by other candidates.

Starksboro family of four loses their home to fire

STARKSBORO — A Starksboro family is coping in the wake of the loss of their home to a fire on Monday, Sept. 19.

Eric Cota, a longtime employee of the Bristol Road Department and a volunteer firefighter, his wife Catina and their two children, Matthew and Jordyn, were not injured in the fire, but the family lost their two dogs, Rascal and Sheba, to the blaze.

Clippings: Pour your soul into it, keep it light and chatty

As an editor, I’ve had the responsibility from time to time to teach a cub reporter how to write a column. It comes so naturally to me that at first I hardly know what to tell them.

“You, er, have to have an idea … um, or not ...

“Just start typing, but remember, any old gibberish won’t do — it’s got to be the right gibberish.

“Pour your soul into it, and keep it light and chatty.”

Addy Indy beginning a new era

MIDDLEBURY — And so an era ends. After 31 years at the Addison Independent, 28 of which she served as advertising manager, Jane Spencer will bid adieu at the end of this week and take on a newly created role as library director of the Bixby Library in Vergennes.

Clippings: After hitting No. 47, it's all downhill

Oh, I had a great birthday, thank you for asking. I got to enjoy almost everything I like, and I don’t just mean chocolate cake with chocolate frosting.

My 47th birthday was a couple Sundays ago. I didn’t have particularly high expectations for a grand day; after a certain age one never does. Sure, I’d get to spend quality time with my family, in particular my sister-in-law during her once-a-year visit from far away. She and her kids were renting a place on Lake Dunmore, which would be a nice place to pass a hot day.

Clippings: News on the Web gets too personal

My dad and I have a lot in common. We were both born and raised in Iowa by Roman Catholic parents. We both went to college and got post-graduate degrees. We both take pleasure in being fathers, enjoy eating peanut butter, prefer manual transmission cars.

What we don’t have in common is the news we read. And that’s not just because we have easy access to different print newspapers given the fact that he lives in Iowa and I live in Vermont.

Local inns offer free stay for returning Vt. National Guard

MIDDLEBURY — A group of 18 Vermont inns and bed and breakfasts, led by the owners of the Swift House Inn in Middlebury, are offering free stays this winter to members of the Vermont National Guard, many of whom are returning home from a one-year tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Nearly 1,500 Vermont National Guard soldiers are returning home from Afghanistan after participating in the Vermont Guard’s largest mobilization since World War II. The first soldiers returned home before Thanksgiving, and the rest are expected home by Christmas.

Fire department fund-raiser a hit

ADDISON — The Addison Volunteer Fire Department is wrapping up a year in which community members not only gave their time and efforts in responding to emergencies, but also reached into their wallets and gave financial support to the department.

The total raised from this month’s tree lighting fund-raiser is not complete, but Geoff Nelson of the department’s finance committee said a few thousand dollars has been raised so far, and a few donations are still coming in.

Granville seeks input on proposed cell tower

GRANVILLE — The Granville selectboard is seeking public comment on a proposed 100-foot cell tower that AT&T seeks to raise off Butz Road in Lower Granville.
The board will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, Nov. 10, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Granville town clerk’s office. The selectboard would like to hear from residents, renters, businesses and second homeowners in Granville and the surrounding areas. A notice of the meeting said it is an opportunity for people to ask questions or make comments to an AT&T representative regarding the proposed wireless communications tower.

Stevens bags decisive win over Jones

SHOREHAM — Incumbent independent Will Stevens of Shoreham on Tuesday won his third term in the Vermont House of Representatives with a 1,059 to 599 victory over Whiting Republican Joy Jones in the Addison-Rutland-1 district, which encompasses Shoreham, Whiting, Orwell and Benson.

Voters in several other area towns returned incumbents to the Vermont House in three uncontested races: Willem Jewett in Addison-2, Republican Joe Acinapura in Brandon, and Betty Nuovo in Middlebury. Newcomer Paul Ralston also won a seat in Middlebury.
