MIDDLEBURY — It was around 80 degrees, humid and drizzly in Middlebury on Monday, but it was just like Christmas at 297 Creek Road where the 31 full- and part-time workers at Addison County Transit Resources were opening a gift for them and the rest of the county: ACTR’s new, 12,500-square-foot headquarters.

“Over the last month, the experience has been somewhat surreal for most people here,” ACTR Director James Moulton said on Monday as he continued to unpack supplies in his new office.

CORNWALL — More than 100 Cornwall residents packed their school cafeteria on Wednesday, June 19, to send a collective message to Vermont Gas Systems: We don’t want your proposed pipeline and we are prepared to go to the courts and/or engage in civil disobedience to stop it.

“I will fight you tooth and nail,” vowed resident Mary Martin, who, with her husband Randy, owns one of the properties through which a natural gas transmission line would travel on its way from Middlebury to the International Paper (IP) mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Livestock has at least temporarily put on hold plans to build a new slaughterhouse and meat-cutting facility in Middlebury’s industrial park, and is instead seeking to move those operations into an existing building in that same area.

The Ferrisburgh-based company has filed an application with Middlebury’s planning office calling for Vermont Livestock to redevelop and occupy approximately two-thirds of the 31,174-square-foot building at 183 Industrial Ave., owned by Anthony Neri.

MIDDLEBURY — Ask some young whippersnapper where milk comes from, and you might get the wiseacre response, “from a carton.”

Well, a new exhibit at the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History aims to set the record straight on all things dairy, covering the past 200 years. On display at the Middlebury museum through Aug. 4, “From Dairy to Doorstep: Milk Delivery in New England” features a mesmerizing mélange of milk memorabilia that would make Old McDonald’s jaw drop.

LEICESTER — Daryle Stone didn’t have much use for school — or at least that’s what he thought 14 years ago as an Otter Valley Union High School freshman.

He wasn’t learning things as easily as his classmates, some of whom teased him for being “slow.”

“I’m the type of person if you made fun of me, there was a confrontation,” Stone, now 28,  recalled.
