Middlebury police opt for Tasers as non-lethal alternative

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday green-lighted their local police department’s proposal to acquire Tasers, a device that officials believe will better enable officers to control aggressive and assaultive suspects without having to resort to deadly force.

“Taser” is the product name for what police refer to as a “Conducted Electrical Weapon (CEW)” that uses an electrical charge to disrupt muscle control in a suspect to which it is applied.

Middlebury native returns with fun, homemade 'Pirate' film

MIDDLEBURY — As a kid growing up in Middlebury during the late 1970s and early 1980s, Peter Ferland would yearn for snow days and weekends when he could break out his Super 8 camera and make some fun-filled movies with his buddies.

He filmed, and occasionally starred in, some abbreviated and decidedly low-budget knock-offs of James Bond and the Swamp Monster. Ferland and his neighbor Mike Sommers filed down the blade of an axe to add realism to their own slasher movie. He also made some very good claymation movies.

Business is brewing on Middlebury's Exchange Street

MIDDLEBURY — Two popular beverage companies in Middlebury’s industrial park are rolling out new ventures aimed at delivering their respective products to a growing number of fans.

Otter Creek Brewing (OCB) is pursuing a 7,195-square-foot brew-house addition for its headquarters at 793 Exchange St. that would allow the company to more than double its annual production of 65,000 barrels of beer.

Porter's new 3-D mammography machine brings breast cancer into focus

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Hospital has acquired a new, state-of-the-art mammography machine that uses 3-D technology in producing images so reliable that it gives staff radiologists a 41-percent better chance in detecting invasive breast cancer compared to the previous, two-dimensional mammography test.

Towns seek tax revenues from lake power line

ADDISON COUNTY — As the Vermont Public Service Board considers a permit for a proposed $1.2 billion electricity transmission line through Lake Champlain, local community planners are asking that the regulator not stop Addison County’s lakefront towns from taxing the underwater line.

If the permit does forestall such taxation, it could mean that Addison, Bridport, Shoreham and Orwell would miss out on up to $7 million in tax revenue, according to the Addison County Regional Planning Commission.

ACSU launches bid to form unified school district

MIDDLEBURY — Residents in the seven Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) towns will vote as soon as next March on a proposal to form a single school board that would have oversight over a single education budget for what would be a consolidated K-12 district.

Bristol Elementary School budget OK'd on third attempt, 285-134

BRISTOL — Bristol voters on Tuesday got a third crack at a proposed 2015-2016 elementary school spending plan, and they passed it this time by a convincing 285-134 tally.

It was the second dose of good news for Bristol-based public schools during the past week. On June 9, Addison Northeast Supervisory Union voters approved the Mount Abraham Union High School budget — also on the third attempt — by an 852 to 597 margin.
