MONKTON — Chris Grant pretty much had life by the tail.

He had his health, a home, a job and a Harley.

Then June 27, 2009, came along and changed his life forever.

Grant, then 36, was taking his motorcycle for a quick burn along Walker Mountain Road in Clarendon. He was a mile-and-a-half from his home when he rolled into a curve and saw an oncoming pickup truck that was veering across the centerline of the road.

MIDDLEBURY — A local dentist is seeking permission to build a pediatric dental office off Court Street in Middlebury, a practice that would serve children as well as adults with disabilities.

The project is being proposed by Brian Collins, a Cornwall resident with almost three decades of experience as a dentist — primarily in Texas. Collins and his wife, Anne, moved to Cornwall a couple years ago. Since then, he has been providing pediatric dental services at offices in Burlington, in hospital settings, and locally with Middlebury Dental Group.

MIDDLEBURY — Erin Davis has fond, vivid memories about how she and her neighborhood playmates used to regularly meet up for imaginative play and games in their native Ohio.

“I was never on a soccer team or a baseball team; I didn’t have a lot of scheduled activities — and neither did my friends at the time,” said Davis, now a Middlebury resident and a teacher of radio documentary at Middlebury College. “We had a lot of free time together to do all sorts of weird, goofy stuff.”

LEICESTER — It’s not an exaggeration to say that education is scaling new heights at Leicester Central School. That’s where a collection of 4th- through 6th-graders — with some help from adults — recently put the finishing touches on six treehouses on school property.

The project has resulted in an amenity for future generations and required the young builders to become versed in all of the academic skills involved in construction.

MIDDLEBURY — A group of area parents are urging the UD-3 school board to invest in some additional college counseling for the Middlebury Union High School Guidance Department. Walt Pyle dies CMYK.jpg

SHOREHAM — Former Gov. James Douglas recalled the late Walter Pyle as a congenial, common-sense lawmaker who was an effective champion for agricultural issues during his seven terms in the Vermont House.

“He was always a gentleman; I never saw him angry or disagreeable,” Douglas said of Pyle during a Thursday interview with the Addison Independent. “He had his convictions, but he respected other points of view.”
