Mary Johnson's Saunders to retire after long childcare career

MIDDLEBURY — It’s Monday morning at Middlebury’s Mary Johnson Children’s Center (MJCC), and the ambiance is like Grand Central Station.

Staff are busy ushering a group of children outdoors for playtime.

Others are helping kids pick up well-used toys and books.

The intoxicating odor of a home-cooked meal wafts from the kitchen, signaling lunchtime is not far away.

Each scene is enveloped in a cacophony of young voices, some registering astounding decibel levels.

Anglers fuel rally to save Salisbury fish hatchery

SALISBURY — State officials and leaders of several hunting and fishing organizations are exploring license fee increases among other possible financial remedies to avert a shutdown of the Salisbury Fish Culture Station. The facility supplies all the broodstock for rainbow, lake, brown and brook trout for stocking Vermont waterways.

Effort to ban plastic bags gains steam

MIDDLEBURY — Supporters of a proposal to ban single-use plastic bags for retail transactions in Middlebury are ramping up their lobbying, and sewing, efforts as a critical town vote on the issue nears.

Middlebury voters on March 5 will decide whether to encourage their selectboard to draft an ordinance that would prevent local retailers from offering customers single-use plastic bags to carry out their purchases.

Merchants Row closure in 2020 to last an additional three weeks

MIDDLEBURY — Downtown Middlebury business owners, residents and shoppers are readying for a 10-week shutdown of both Merchants Row and Main Street during the summer of 2020 in order to accommodate the heaviest construction on a new tunnel to replace two aging rail bridges.

It’s been billed as a “tear-off-the-Band Aid” approach to get the most intensive work done as quickly as possible on the $72 million project.

Residents to shape future of Ilsley Library

MIDDLEBURY — Ilsley Public Library officials recently spent five months asking Middlebury residents what kind of services they expect from their local library.

Now everyone gets to hear the results, which will be delivered at two public meetings at the Ilsley Library. The first is slated for Monday, Feb. 25, at 5:30 p.m.; the second will take place Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 12:30 p.m.

Class gets Parkinson's patients moving

MIDDLEBURY — Area residents living with Parkinson’s disease can benefit from a new exercise program to be hosted by the EastView at Middlebury retirement community and at the town’s recreation facility.

It’s called “PushBack at Parkinson’s Disease,” a series of twice-per-week classes that will begin on Feb. 26 and end on April 25. Longtime local fitness trainer Kimberly Cobb is a trained PushBack coach who will lead the classes, with help from volunteers.

Dancers jump for joy thanks to new floor at Midd rec center

MIDDLEBURY — Dancing at the Middlebury Recreation Center has been a joyous, yet at-times painful activity. The hard flooring hasn’t been friendly to the feet and muscles of those who’ve used it for disciplines ranging from ballet to hip-hop.

But a recent partnership between a renowned local dancer and a community oriented-construction company has culminated in new flooring at the recreation center that will benefit current and future generations of dancers.

Lawmakers join effort to ban plastics

BRISTOL — Several Addison County lawmakers on Monday said they’ll back legislation aimed at removing single-use plastic products — such as shopping bags — from Vermont’s waste stream.

Bills like H.74 — which proposes to prohibit food service establishments from providing carryout bags, expanded polystyrene food service products, and plastic straws to customers — drew considerable debate at a legislative breakfast at the Bristol American Legion post on Airport Road.
