Beauty or blight? Middlebury solar farm plan draws mixed reactions

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard’s March 27 public hearing on a proposed 4.99-megawatt solar farm off Halladay Road provided further evidence that when it comes to solar panels, the words “beauty” and “blight’ can be used to describe the same thing.

It all depends on whose eyes and which property lines are involved.

Former Connor Homes building on Route 7 is auctioned off

MIDDLEBURY — Patrick Malone of Montpelier-based Malone Properties was the winning bidder at Tuesday’s auction for the 1741 Route 7 South building that for many years hosted Standard Register and most recently, Connor Homes. He confirmed to the Addison Independent his plans to renovate the now-vacant, 116,000-square-foot building for lease to a single or multiple businesses looking to grow in Middlebury.

State police probe thefts of sugaring equipment

BRISTOL — Vermont State Police said they’ve identified suspects in connection with thefts and vandalism targeting multiple sugarworks in Bristol, Lincoln, Cornwall and other Addison County locations during the past three weeks.

Trooper Brett Flansburg on Tuesday confirmed the list of victims includes Mayer Maple Products off Route 116 in Bristol, as well as smaller, residential sugaring operations.

Flansburg said he was aware of five sugarworks cases currently under investigation by officials at the VSP’s New Haven barracks.

Hundreds rally for firearm safety in Middlebury; petition seeks changes in laws

MIDDLEBURY — People rallying for tighter gun laws took their cause from the streets of downtown Middlebury on Saturday to a local gathering of lawmakers on Monday, as they maintained their full-court press on state officials to pass firearm safety legislation during the waning weeks of this session.

Caleb Elder joins Addison-4 House race

STARKSBORO — Caleb Elder has been a leader in his community on renewable energy and education issues.

Now he wants to offers his ideas on those and a variety of other subjects as a member of the Vermont House representing the Addison-4 district.

The Starksboro Democrat had been considering a run for the past four years, and now believes the time is right. He joins a field that already includes fellow Democrats Paul Forlenza and Mari Cordes of Lincoln, as well as incumbent (and top vote-getter in 2016) Rep. Fred Baser, R-Bristol.

Vermont Senate eyes funding path to clean water

SHOREHAM — The Vermont Senate this week was set to take action on a bill that would lead to a funding scheme for the state’s share of an estimated $2.3 billion cleanup of the state’s waterways — including Lake Champlain.

Bill S.260 would create an eight-person study committee that would be asked, among other things, to consider a per-parcel fee to collect the more than $26 million in annual revenues over the next 20-plus years that is Vermont’s share of the federally mandated cleanup.
