Cornwall, Mary Hogan and Weybridge schools get new principals

MIDDLEBURY — New principals this summer will take charge at four of the Addison Central School District’s seven elementary schools.

Three have already been hired: Nicole Carter, recently chosen to succeed longtime Weybridge Elementary School Principal Christina Johnston; Heather Raabe, who will replace Jen Kravitz at the Bingham Memorial School in Cornwall; and Kravitz, who will move from Cornwall to the helm of Middlebury’s Mary Hogan Elementary.

Climate in the spotlight at legislative breakfast

WEYBRIDGE — While more than 200 hearty climate-change activists on Monday morning were battling rain, hail and wind during the final leg of their symbolic walk from Middlebury to the Statehouse in Montpelier, a much smaller group of citizens was meeting with local lawmakers in Weybridge to lobby for legislation aimed at reducing the state’s carbon footprint.

Addison Central Teens seeks new center director

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Teens (ACT) is in the market for a new executive director, and those interested in the job still have time to apply.

Former director Zoe Kaslow stepped down from the position three months ago after just short of a year on the job. She enjoyed her time with the organization but elected to take a post with Planned Parenthood, according to ACT board President Al Zaccor.

Salisbury couple recovering after rabid coyote attack

SALISBURY — George Gilman, 79, has harvested game and wood from his property off Hubbard Road in Salisbury for decades. He’s dealt with everything Mother Nature could throw at him.

He remains undefeated, but a little worse for wear, in the aftermath of an attack by a rabid coyote on Monday, April 1. He and his wife Priscilla, 76, are now going through a progression of rabies shots after having been bitten by the coyote, which George was able to kill with a shotgun blast so that its remains could be tested at the Vermont Department of Health lab in Burlington.

Salisbury conservation fund would protect key parcels, say advocates

SALISBURY — Members of the Salisbury Conservation Commission are pitching the idea of a local conservation fund that would allow the community to perpetually protect select local properties that have special environmental, scenic, recreational, agricultural and/or wildlife qualities.

Local residents Preston and Chris Turner have generously donated $5,000 in seed money for the proposed fund, according to commission member Heidi Willis. Preston serves on the conservation commission, while Chris is the community’s Green-Up Day organizer.

THE COUNSELING SERVICE of Addison County hosted a send-off party for its longtime executive director, Bob Thorn, on Thursday, March 28. Thorn took a moment for a photo with his successor, Rachel Lee Cummings. Others at the party included many past and present CSAC employees and clients, as well as Thorn’s family and friends. Former Gov. James Douglas of Middlebury was among the local luminaries to wish Thorn the best during the next chapter of his life.

Game store owner shares his dream for the former Ben Franklin

MIDDLEBURY — Scott Gemignani is in the business of magic and fantasy; his downtown Middlebury game store, Tinker & Smithy, sells it by the box.

But some might say the latest trick up his sleeve could compete with anything that could be scripted in DungeonQuest, Battlelore, or War of the Ring.

He’s attempting to conjure the purchase of the former Ben Franklin store property at 63 Main St. and transform it into a mixture of retail, arcade, bowling alley, burger joint and affordable housing.

Weybridge teen offers glimpse into Muslim community's concerns

MIDDLEBURY — Narges Anzali speaks and writes so clearly, beautifully and effortlessly, you have to remind yourself she’s only 13.

But living in a world where one can face taunts, jeers or much worse for simply being Muslim, Anzali has had to grow up more quickly than other teens at Middlebury Union Middle School. She’s fluent in three languages and her voluminous English vocabulary includes words like “Islamophobia.”
