Turning Point hands out 69 Narcan kits

MIDDLEBURY — The Turning Point Center of Addison County in Middlebury gave out 69 free Narcan emergency kits to a total of 29 people seeking to have the substance handy for a friend or loved one at risk of overdosing on opiates.

Town tries crosswalk safety flags

MIDDLEBURY — Pedestrians using Middlebury’s Main Street crosswalk in front of the U.S. Post Office will literally be able to take their safety into their own hands.

That crosswalk — identified as one of the most dangerous in downtown Middlebury — is being used to pilot a new amenity for pedestrians through the town’s Safe Routes to School initiative: crosswalk safety flags.

Study reveals Middlebury shopping trends

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury has a fairly strong and diverse retail market that could be improved by a general merchandise store, more restaurants and more clothing and electronics options. And the community should not fret about a “big box” entity seeking to build a mega store in town, because the amount of shopping dollars leaking from the community to other retail hubs is not enough to induce a developer to build such a store in Addison County’s shire town.

Court decision spurs hike in a few Middlebury property assessment

MIDDLEBURY — Around 20 Middlebury taxpayers who used the state’s Homeland Program in acquiring their homes were alarmed last week to see their property assessments rise dramatically to fair market levels following elimination of a formula governing how participating properties are valued.

Middlebury town officials push for conditions on Phase II pipeline

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard has for the past several months listened to corporate presentations and public feedback about Vermont Gas Systems’ proposed natural gas pipeline that would extend from Middlebury to the International Paper mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

On Tuesday, individual board members for the first time opened up on how they feel about the controversial, $70 million “Phase II” project.

LCMM schooner to breathe life into Battle of Plattsburgh

FERRISBURGH — When the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum launched the replica canal schooner Lois McClure back in 2004, then-LCMM Director Art Cohn anticipated the majestic vessel might complete a single, triumphant sailing tour and then serve as a very important exhibit on how maritime commerce was conducted in the region during the mid- to late 1800s.

Jette fills vacancy on Middlebury school board

MIDDLEBURY — Mary Hogan Elementary School directors on May 19 appointed Middlebury resident Victoria Jette to a board vacancy created by the recent resignation of incumbent Jim Callahan.

Callahan verbally resigned from the ID-4 school board on April 17, citing a disagreement with board Chairwoman Ruth Hardy. Callahan had been elected to a three-year term on the board on March 4 and attended only two meetings before resigning.

Russ Sholes senior group disbands, donates assets to CVAA

MIDDLBURY — The Russ Sholes Senior Center was a pretty big draw when it formed in Middlebury some 35 years ago. Dozens of seniors gathered regularly in the lower level of Middlebury’s municipal building to share potluck meals, chat, and play cards and board games. A group of crafts enthusiasts —whom then-Town Clerk Richard Goodro fondly anointed the “sew-sew girls” — would also meet up to stitch and knit together, making clothes that they would donate to local charities.
