Area Democrats to vie in Aug. 14 runoffs for sheriff, House seats

BRISTOL — Local primary elections typically offer few fireworks and are thus notorious for low voter turnout.

But a hotly contested race for sheriff and a crowded runoff for the Addison-4 House district are giving Addison County residents — and particularly Democrats in the Bristol area — extra reasons to vote on Aug. 14.

Local interest is also being generated by Ethan Sonneborn, a 14-year-old Bristol youth who will compete for the Democrat nomination for governor.

Carol's café closes after 13 years; new coffeehouse to open in its place

MIDDLEBURY — Downtown Middlebury’s much-loved, but financially challenged, Carol’s Hungry Mind Café sold its last muffin and cup of coffee on Tuesday, with owner John Melanson saying a slow summer and mounting debts finally forced him to throw in the towel.

Orwell readies for Act 46 showdown; school could face forced merger

Peter Bevere seeks county prosecutor job

MIDDLEBURY — Attorney Peter Bevere has already prosecuted cases in Chittenden and Rutland counties.

Now he wants to perform that job closer to his Middlebury home. So Bevere, 44, has decided to challenge incumbent Addison County State’s Attorney Dennis Wygmans this November. Bevere recently filed his nomination papers to run as an independent against Wygmans, a Democrat.

Local couple prepares for Muslim pilgrimage

MIDDLEBURY — Farhad Khan has spent a half-century dreaming about a trip designed to fortify his religious faith and cleanse his spirit.

The Middlebury resident’s dream is about to come true.

Farhad and his wife, Amtul, on Aug. 11 will join 16 other members of the Vermont Islamic Society (VIS) in a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It’s called the “Hajj,” a religious obligation that every adult Muslim must fulfill at least once in their lifetime, if they are physically able and have the resources to do so.

Food shelves seeking support, even with gleaning

MIDDLEBURY — Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) is calling for food donations to carry hungry Addison County residents into this fall, when local food drives kick off to help nonprofit organizations replenish their larders.

At the same time, HOPE is beginning to reap the rewards of its annual gleaning program, through which several Addison County farms are contributing surplus fruits and vegetables for residents who can’t afford to maintain a balanced diet.

HOPE Executive Director Jeanne Montross hopes that effort can fill in the gaps.

Medicinal pot to be sold in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County’s first-ever medical marijuana dispensary is set to open on July 31 at 1641 Route 7 South in Middlebury.

The tightly regulated business will offer approximately 35 different strains of marijuana to area residents who have state permission to use the substance to help them deal with a variety of serious illnesses, including cancer and Parkinson’s disease.

Independents Ralston and Audet team up for Senate race

ADDISON COUNTY — The election for the two Senate seats that represent Addison County, Huntington and Buel’s Gore just became a five-way race.

Marie Audet of Bridport and Paul Ralston of New Haven on Monday were set to declare via a press release that they are running as Independents to represent the two-seat district in the Vermont Senate.
