Aurora to open new preschool in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The former Aurora School headquarters in Middlebury will soon host a new pre-school that will take full advantage of the natural surroundings of its 238 Peterson Terrace campus.

Set to open next month with an initial enrollment of six children, the new venture will be appropriately named the “Aurora Preschool,” staffed by Katie McMurray, the former lead teacher of the East Middlebury Cooperative Preschool.

Rep. Sheldon is assigned to new House panel

MONTPELIER — Rep. Amy Sheldon, D-Middlebury, began the 2018 legislative session last week with a new committee assignment. Democrat House leaders transferred her from the Agriculture & Forestry Committee to the Commerce & Economic Development Committee.

Sheldon, beginning her fourth year in the House, said party officials believe she can help House Commerce make progress on a key issue this session: How independent contractors could be better defined as part of the state’s workforce.

Up to 20 teachers and aides could be cut in Bristol-area schools

BRISTOL — Bristol-area voters on March 6 will field their first-ever unified budget covering all Addison Northeast schools.

The proposed 2018-2019 spending plan now under consideration calls for elimination of 20 full-time-equivalent staff positions — including six full-time teachers — in order to achieve the $1,177,814 in reductions needed to meet the Mount Abraham Unified School District (MAUSD) board’s austerity guidelines.

Shashok to take a pass on re-election to Middlebury selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectboard Vice Chairwoman Susan Shashok confirmed on Tuesday she won’t seek another three-year term this March, while the panel’s newest member, Farhad Kahn, said he would run for the post to which he was appointed last March.

The two incumbents’ plans lend some clarity to a Middlebury election picture that will come into full focus on Monday, Jan. 29, the date by which candidates for various municipal and school offices must hand in their petition papers to the town clerk’s office.

Middlebury Selectman Farhad Khan to run for first three-year term

MIDDLEBURY — While one Middlebury selectboard veteran will not run for re-election on Town Meeting Day, the panel’s newest member says he will seek voter approval to stay for three more years.

Selectman Farhad Khan on Tuesday said he will run for the post to which he was appointed last March. Selectwoman Susan Shashok confirmed she won’t run (See story, Page 1A).

Auto parts store to set up shop on Exchange Street in Middlebury

MIDDLBEURY — The former home of Whirlie’s World at 1232 Exchange St. in Middlebury will soon be occupied by a Fisher Auto Parts store that is tentatively scheduled to open next month.

The Middlebury Development Review Board recently paved the way for the new store by authorizing a change in use at the 1232 Exchange St. location from “indoor recreation” to “retail.”

Once open, the store will sell a variety of auto parts and accessories on both a retail and wholesale basis.

Area police officers grow beards to give kids respite from cancer

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Police Department’s second annual “Deer Camp Beard’s for Kids with Cancer” campaign has raised more than $2,200 for programming at Camp Ta-Kum-Ta.

Middlebury police Officer Darrin Hinterneder once again coordinated the effort, which included participation from other Addison County law enforcement agencies, including the Addison County Sheriff’s Department.
