MIDDLEBURY — Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center (PHCC) officials on Monday confirmed a new, two-year deal with the school’s 19 full- and part-time teachers that includes annual raises and a requirement that educators pay a greater proportion of their health insurance.

The current base pay for a starting teacher at the PHCC is $42,256, according to Jason Larocque, chairman of the career center board. The new contract guarantees a 1.5 percent increase in that base pay in year one, and a 1.25-percent rise in year two of the pact.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday unanimously endorsed a slightly modified version of the Vermont League of Cities and Towns’ (VLCT) current position on legalizing marijuana, stating that cannabis should be OK’d for recreational use only after related “public safety, public health and local regulatory and budgetary concerns are adequately addressed.”

The board’s vote comes in wake of a recent townwide survey in which 71 percent of the 773 respondents said they believed Vermont should legalize recreational marijuana.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents on Nov. 7 will vote on whether their community should charge Vermont Gas for three pipeline easements it is seeking on town-owned property.

The selectboard has tentatively decided to give those easements for free to Vermont Gas, which is building out distribution lines within the community for its Addison Natural Gas Project.

But local resident Ross Conrad believes Vermont Gas should have to pay for those easements, and he launched a successful citizens’ petition effort to give residents a say on the matter.

MIDDLEBURY — The Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) food shelf in Middlebury is seeing a substantial uptick in demand from Addison County residents who are having a hard time making ends meet.

That, in itself, is of major concern to HOPE Executive Director Jeanne Montross. But the problem is compounded by the fact that this demand is occurring before the toughest winter months, and Montross knows there are many other hungry people in more distant reaches of the county who simply can’t get to the HOPE food shelf.
