MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials have long chanted the mantra “We’re all in this together,” when it comes to enduring the massive downtown rail bridges project that will create some hardship before culminating in a more alluring and utilitarian village core by 2021.

So it’s no coincidence that the citizens’ group that will help the downtown weather the construction storm is calling itself “Neighbors Together.”

County election slate takes shape

Posted on June 4, 2018 |
By John Flowers

ADDISON COUNTY — An Aug. 14 primary election will be required to whittle down a surplus of Democrats competing for Addison County sheriff and the two seats representing the Addison-4 district in the Vermont House.

Meanwhile, three other districts will feature no races at all for the general election, barring an eleventh-hour bid by an independent or write-in candidate. Incumbent lawmakers representing the Addison-1, Addison-2, Addison-3 and Addison-5 House districts currently have no competition for new two-year terms in Montpelier.

Kulhowvick to retire after 47 years at MUMS

MIDDLEBURY — George Kulhowvick was an intimidating force on the football field during his high school and college years. He’d just as soon run you over as go around you to get into the end zone.

It’s a far cry from the classroom persona that “Mr. K” exudes in his Middlebury Union Middle School social studies class. While he practices some of the leadership principles he learned on the football field, Kulhowvick is known for being a fun-loving guy with a genuine interest in the subject matter he’s teaching.

MIDDLEBURY — The fourth annual Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival, set for August 23 to 26, will break its record for film submissions and boast a stellar lineup of industry guests, including some recent Academy Award winners.

“This has been a marvelous experience to build this festival into something that really does serve the community, nurture film culture and develop a network of filmmakers who really love us and want to come back — whether they have a film or not,” Festival Producer Lloyd Komesar said. “It’s a great thing.”

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials are discussing ways to solve the local police force's current lack of reliable storage space, a problem that could drive the need for a new building near the department's headquarters off Seymour Street.

The silver lining to the problem is the community already has money on hand that could at least partially bankroll a solution.

Like taking over the top job at the Vermont Electric Cooperative (VEC) 13 years ago when it was staring into a financial abyss.

Like quitting her job on March 2 to run for governor this November, making her the first transgender gubernatorial candidate in the nation’s history.
