Salisbury biogas-to-energy plan scuttled

MIDDLEBURY — Integrated Energy Solutions (EIS) has pulled the plug on a project that would have extracted energy from cow manure and sent it through a pipeline from Salisbury to Middlebury College.

Dan Smith, president of EIS, confirmed the news during a recent phone interview. He declined to discuss specific reasons for scuttling the already permitted project, but indicated financing has been a major obstacle.

Judge Sessions to explain judicial thinking on Thursday

MIDDLEBURY — U.S. District Court Judge William K. Sessions III will hold court in Middlebury on Thursday, April 13 — not to rule on any cases, but to give Addison County residents a sense of what goes into a jurist’s decision-making process on matters related to free speech.

The longtime Cornwall resident and Middlebury College alum’s talk, titled “Constitutional Law: The First Amendment, a Judicial Perspective,” will begin at 7 p.m. at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society meeting hall at 2 Duane Court.

Porter Medical Center planning for new growth on campus

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center officials are back to work planning for future growth on the PMC campus during the next five years. The four-month effort will culminate in a facilities master plan that will be anchored by a new medical office building.

Battell Block to undergo major renovations

ACSD considers moving 6th-grade to MUMS

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District board is expected to vote this June on whether to expand Middlebury Union Middle School to include grades 6-8 beginning in the fall of 2018. It’s a move some district officials believe would allow teachers to more effectively deliver International Baccalaureate Program instruction.

Currently, sixth-graders in the ACSD are taught in elementary schools in the district-member communities of Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Ripton, Salisbury, Shoreham and Weybridge. MUMS serves children in grades 7 and 8.

Federal funding for lake cleanup hangs in balance

SALISBURY — Vermont lawmakers continue to be concerned about a potential decline in federal Environmental Protection Agency assistance for cleanup of Lake Champlain under the Trump administration.

Lake Champlain cleanup through the Clean Water Act was a topic of discussion at Monday’s Legislative Breakfast at the Salisbury Congregational Church.

Recent estimates have placed the lake cleanup costs at around $48 million annually over the next 20 years.

MUHS competitors flex their intellectual muscles

MIDDLEBURY — Two of Middlebury Union High School’s most successful teams this year haven’t scored a single run, goal, touchdown or basket.

But they’ve scored a ton of points in academic competition.

A group of MUHS students continued the school’s stellar track record at the annual Vermont-NEA Scholars’ Bowl, placing in the top four in the varsity state tourney held on March 25.

Farming helps retain young Vermonters

SALISBURY — Lawmakers believe that unless the exodus of Vermont youth to other states is reversed, the Green Mountain State will lose a large chunk of its tax base — not to mention a valuable pool of employees for businesses.

“These are the (people) who fuel our economy and … who pay into the revenues in the state,” Rep. Harvey Smith, R-New Haven, said at a Legislative Breakfast in Salisbury on March 27. “It’s going to be a balancing act as to how we stabilize our economy and our population.”

Business as usual for Vermont healthcare until feds act

SALISBURY — While the Trump administration’s effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act failed in Congress, state lawmakers at the March 27 Legislative Breakfast in Salisbury said it’s too soon to tell what, if any, short- or long-term changes are in store for Vermont’s health care system.

“It’s all up in the air,” said Sen. Claire Ayer, D-Addison, whose committee deals with health care legislation.

VTrans to install temporary bridges over RR in downtown Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The long-awaited, $52 million effort to replace of Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges is not expected to begin until early next year, but area residents this June will get a sneak preview of the major work to come. That’s when the Vermont Agency of Transportation will take out the deteriorating Merchants Row and Main Street spans and replace them with temporary bridges.
