Independents Ralston and Audet team up for Senate race

ADDISON COUNTY — The election for the two Senate seats that represent Addison County, Huntington and Buel’s Gore just became a five-way race.

Marie Audet of Bridport and Paul Ralston of New Haven on Monday were set to declare via a press release that they are running as Independents to represent the two-seat district in the Vermont Senate.

Locals seek to recognize Stan Lazarus with a park

MIDDLEBURY — Turn back the clock a half century.

Downtown Middlebury was a bustling retail hub. Just about every local family went to the Lazarus Department Store at 22-26 Main St. (pictured below) to outfit themselves and their kids with sturdy clothing and shoes.

Omnipresent store owner Stanton Lazarus brought a combination of business acumen and compassion to his running of the business that bore his family name. His philanthropy became legendary, though he tried to keep it low-key.

Playwright project promotes female leads on stage

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater has built a great reputation for staging an eclectic mix of plays and musicals using an array of talented actors to bring the subject matter to life.

One thread has run through many of the productions: The presence of men in the most dominant roles.

It’s not that THT brass have intentionally selected plays that celebrate male characters and/or themes; it’s just that a majority of the classics — from “Macbeth” to “Sweeney Todd” — have masculine protagonists.

Candidates disclose campaign finances; Hardy, Newton have raised the most

ADDISON COUNTY — First-time state Senate candidate Ruth Hardy is thus far the big leader in campaign fund raising in the lead up to the November general elections. Records on file with the Vermont Secretary of State’s Office show the East Middlebury Democrat had raised $12,722 as of July 15, the latest campaign finance filing deadline for major party candidates who had raised or spent more than $500 since March 15.

Horror flick has Middlebury College connections

MIDDLEBURY — Alexander Draper is comfortable in a classroom, but he thrives in a pressure cooker.

So after bidding his graduating students goodbye this past May, Draper — an associate professor of theater at Middlebury College — screamed over to the macabre set of his latest acting assignment: A feature-length horror movie called “The Witch in the Window” that will have its world premier on Monday, July 23, at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival.

Former deputy Holmes eyes return as county's new sheriff

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County High Bailiff Ron Holmes has the power to arrest the sheriff if such an action were ever warranted.

He’s never been called upon to do so.

And now, with Sheriff Don Keeler preparing to retire at year’s end, Holmes is involved in a three-man race to lead the department on which he served as a deputy for 25 years.

Effort to site local food hub progresses

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Economic Development Corp. (ACEDC) has joined a growing effort to create a local food hub at which small-scale producers could process, store and market their wares. And the effort is gaining momentum, as organizers will be touring two potential food hub locations and have applied for grants to study the potential  creation, participation level and economic impact of an Addison County food hub.

Middlebury tax rate rises slightly

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on July 10 approved a new residential property tax rate of $2.8414 per $100 in assessed value, representing  a 3.5-cent (1.27 percent) increase compared to the previous rate of $2.8059.

News is not as good for the owners of non-residential property in the community, however.

The board also approved a non-residential property tax rate of $2.8481, which amounts to a 10.7-cent (3.9 percent) increase compared to the current rate of $2.74.
