Addison Northwest teachers ink new two-year contract

VERGENNES — The Addison Northwest Teachers’ Association (ANTA) and the Addison Northwest School District (ANWSD) board have both ratified a new, two-year contract for the district’s approximately 100 teachers that guarantees them annual raises and requires them to pay a greater share of their health insurance premiums.

As Helen Porter’s new top administrator, Nottonson will guide the Middlebury nonprofit through a $1 million renovation project while simultaneously looking at ways to shore up a fiscal year 2017 deficit currently estimated at $2.1 million.

Officials solicit input on Middlebury town plan

MIDDLEBURY — At its Tuesday evening meeting the Middlebury selectboard set Oct. 24 as the first of two public hearings on proposed updates to the Middlebury Town Plan.

The document — last updated in 2012 — serves as a municipal blueprint for how Middlebury residents would like to see their community grow in the future. Town plans must be updated every five years, though new legislation will soon extend that period to eight years, according to Middlebury Town Planner Jennifer Murray.

It's all in a day's work for a Vermont State Police trooper

ADDISON COUNTY — The invitation to ride along with a Vermont State Police trooper got a little intimidating after reading the requisite consent form. The passenger — in this case, a reporter — shouldn’t rule out the possibility of being whisked at a high rate of speed to a crime scene and the risk of injury, and yes, even death.

This scribe swallowed even harder when VSP Sgt. Blake Cushing of the New Haven barracks recommended close scrutiny of the location of the cruiser’s radio in case the trooper were incapacitated and needed backup.

Lakeside towns seek power-line tax revenues

MIDDLEBURY — Four Addison County communities have joined a legal effort to compel developers of the proposed New England Clean Power Link (NECPL) to pay municipal property taxes on the entire electric power transmission line — including the segment located on the bed of Lake Champlain off their respective shorelines.

College, Middlebury-area schools form partnership on world study

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College and the Addison Central School District (ACSD) have forged a new partnership through which their respective students will gain knowledge and build career foundations through the International Baccalaureate program.

This past October the ACSD board unanimously agreed to begin a three-year process to become a district of IB World Schools. If successful, the Middlebury-area school district will become one of fewer than 10 IB World Districts in the United States.

ACTR bus company marks 25 years on the go

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) began its journey back in 1992 with a handful of volunteer drivers believing they could make a difference for shut-ins, the disabled and people who couldn’t afford their own vehicles.

A quarter-century later, ACTR provides more than 180,000 rides per year through six different public bus routes helping people get around Addison County and to Rutland and Burlington.

Aurora School closes, but might soon reopen as learning center

MIDDLEBURY — For the first time in more than 20 years, Middlebury’s Aurora School did not open its doors to students this month. Declining enrollment made it financially impossible to continue its K-8 programming. But Aurora leaders are in the process of reimagining the school’s mission in a manner that could soon bring hungry minds back to 238 Peterson Terrace.

Local Rotarians fly Texas flag in solidarity with hurricane victims

MIDDLEBURY — People walking and traveling around Middlebury’s Court Square this past weekend noticed an unfamiliar red-white-and-blue flag buffeted by the wind. Middlebury Rotary Club members placed the Texas state flag in Court Square as a symbolic gesture of solidarity with residents of the Lone Star State, who continue to deal with devastating flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
