Bristol election ballot boasts one contest

BRISTOL — Residents of Bristol will vote in only one contested election on Town Meeting Day.

Kevin Hanson and Krista Siringo are vying for a three-year spot representing Bristol on the new Mount Abraham Unified School Board. But whomever loses that race will have other options for joining the panel, which governs the combined K-12 schools in Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro.

A hike in the minimum wage is favored

BRIDPORT — A bill in the state Senate calls for a gradual increase in the state’s minimum wage, from the current $10.50 to $15 per hour by 2022. It was the topic of some discussion among lawmakers at Monday’s Legislative Breakfast at the Bridport Grange Hall.

Rep. Fred Baser, R-Bristol, is a member of the House Ways & Means Committee, which will review the bill when/if it emerges from the Senate.

Local lawmakers explain marijuana legalization

BRIDPORT — Gov. Phil Scott last week signed a bill that will allow adults in Vermont to possess up to an ounce of marijuana and to cultivate up to two mature plants on their property.

A majority of Addison County’s legislative delegation supported the marijuana bill, and some of those legislators explained their votes at a Legislative Breakfast at the Bridport Grange Hall on Monday.

Legislators consider health care changes

BRIDPORT — Lawmakers explained legislation they’ve seen on reforming health care and regulating opioids when they spoke at the first legislative breakfast of 2017, held Monday at the Bridport Grange Hall.

On the health care front, Sen. Claire Ayer, D-Addison, confirmed legislation proposing at make Vermont a “wholesaler” and therefore authorized to import prescription drugs from Canada.

Former co-chief of ambulance service pleads in embezzlement

MIDDLEBURY — A former co-director of Middlebury Regional EMS has pleaded innocent to four felony charges of embezzlement, stemming from allegations that she stole a combined total of $7,802 from the nonprofit over a more than year-long period to pay for personal items, gifts for friends and her own medical expenses.

Lisa M. Northup, 46, entered her plea during her Jan. 22 arraignment in Addison Superior Court, criminal division.

Middlebury floats small town budget increase

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents at town meeting will consider a fiscal year 2019 municipal budget of $10,574,426, of which $7,331,905 would be raised through local property taxes. It’s a proposed spending plan that would result in an increase of about one-third of one penny in the community’s current municipal rate of 98.2 cents.

One penny on Middlebury’s property tax rate raises roughly $75,000.

MUHS maintains 15 slots for 'school choice'

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School next year will continue to serve 15 students from surrounding districts as part of the state’s limited public school choice program.

The Addison Central School District board last week agreed to preserve the 15 slots, which are consistently all spoken for by students from the adjacent Addison Northwest and Mount Abraham union school districts. Bill Lawson, principal of MUHS, said there are typically three or four more applicants than there are available slots, thus triggering a lottery.

School task force working on racism report

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District’s new Task Force on Racism, Bias and Discrimination has been granted a time extension through May to develop a series of recommendations to help address any “explicit and implicit bias” in Middlebury-area schools.

The committee, led by Middlebury Union Middle School Principal Kristin Holsman-Francoeur and Middlebury College Chief Diversity Officer Miguel Fernandez, was originally slated to issue its final report in January.

Vote warned for $36.7 million ACSD budget

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District board on Monday unanimously agreed to present Middlebury-area voters with a $36,762,479 spending plan to cover public school expenses in the seven district-member towns. This budget reflects a 1.32-percent spending decrease and would result in elimination of more than 20 full-time-equivalent jobs.

Local doctor helps Syrian refugee children in Lebanon

MIDDLEBURY — Dr. Morris Earle Jr. probably goes through suitcases the way most people go through Kleenex.

The pediatrician has made Middlebury his home base for several decades, but his medical talents take him throughout the world. The most recent travel sticker on his Samsonite reads “Lebanon,” where Dr. Earle spent two months setting up a pediatric intensive care unit serving young Syrian refugees flooding that Middle Eastern nation.
