Middlebury eyes plan for growth on Route 7

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Planning Commission is preparing to study a key stretch of Route 7 South in an effort to give local officials, residents and property owners a better sense of how that area could be developed in a way that would attract economic development without creating sprawl.

Middlebury Town Planner Jennifer Murray is calling it a “Route 7 corridor master plan,” which will focus on a specific portion of that major, north-south artery.

New makery plans series of events for innovators

Middlebury OKs new water and sewer rates

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury water users will see an increase in their rates this fiscal year, while some residents will see their wastewater bill go down.

The Middlebury selectboard unanimously endorsed new fiscal year 2019 water and sewer rates on June 26. Fiscal year 2019 started on July 1 and ends on June 30, 2019.

A typical residential/commercial water user can expect to see their quarterly bill to rise by $8.22, based on consumption of 9,300 gallons during that three-month period, according to estimates prepared by town officials.

Massage therapist faces new allegations

MIDDLEBURY — A former Middlebury massage therapist has pleaded innocent to an additional 30 misdemeanor charges of voyeurism and one count of possessing child pornography in connection with an ongoing investigation of his alleged use of video equipment to record women clients in various states of undress at Rogers Relaxing Massage Therapy LLC, formerly located at 31 Court St.

In House bid, Bristol's Demic says stellar education system is key

BRISTOL — Robert Demic beat the odds in 2008 when he miraculously survived a more than 40-foot fall from the roof of a downtown Middlebury building.

Now the Bristol Democrat is hoping his good fortune and tenacity will earn him a spot in the Vermont House in his first-ever campaign. He is seeking one of the two seats representing the Addison-4 district, which includes the towns of Bristol, Monkton, Starksboro and Lincoln.

Monkton's Mullin underscores 'affordability' in third House run

MONKTON — Monkton Republican Valerie Mullin is hoping the third time will be the charm when it comes to her latest effort to win one of two seats representing the Addison-4 district in the Vermont House.

Mullin, 59, amassed respectable vote totals in both the 2014 and 2016 elections, but not enough to out-poll incumbent Reps. Fred Baser, R-Bristol and Dave Sharpe, D-Bristol.

Mark Bradley to take stage as new THT director

MIDDLEBURY — Town Hall Theater (THT) officials cast a nationwide net in their search for a new executive director.

They ended up hiring a man who currently lives around 90 minutes away from Middlebury.

Mark Bradley, currently assistant director of the Lebanon (N.H.) Opera House, will on Aug. 8 begin his new job as the THT’s top administrator. He will succeed Doug Anderson, who will transition to a newly created position of “artistic director” for the historic performing arts center on Middlebury’s Merchants Row.

Briggs launches second try for Senate seat, calls for lower taxes

ADDISON — Addison Republican Peter Briggs is taking another run at the state Senate, where he hopes to rally support for growing the economy and decreasing taxes.

Briggs, a 27-year-old dairy farmer, is making his second consecutive bid for one of the two seats in the Vermont Senate representing Addison County, Huntington and Buel’s Gore. He finished third in 2016 in a four-way race that saw re-election of incumbent state Sens. Claire Ayer of Addison and Christopher Bray of New Haven, both Democrats.
