Job fair planned as filaments firm closes

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Department of Labor will hold a job fair at the Middlebury American Legion on Boardman Street on Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to help 62 Monahan Filaments workers who will become unemployed as of this Friday, Nov. 13.

Champlain Bridge to be torn down

ADDISON — Transportation officials from Vermont and New York on Monday announced that the Champlain Bridge that spans Lake Champlain between Addison, Vt., and Crown Point, N.Y., will be demolished.

The bridge was closed abruptly on Oct. 16 after an inspection of the 80-year-old bridge revealed structural deficiencies in two of its 11 concrete piers.

Deputy won't challenge new county prosecutor

CORRECTION: This article originally reported that David Fenster would be sworn in at the Addison County courthouse at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17. In fact, Fenster will be sworn in at 3 p.m.

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Deputy State’s Attorney Christopher Perkett confirmed on Thursday that he will not challenge incoming prosecutor David Fenster in the November 2010 election.

VPR seeks bargain rent for spot on Middlebury tower

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Public Radio officials are hoping to reach a harmonious accord with Middlebury selectmen to get a transmitter placed on the Chipman Hill tower in order to establish a classical radio station to serve the county.

Dabbs leaves role at free clinic

MIDDLEBURY — Ken Dabbs on Dec. 23 will step down after a very brief, but tremendously productive tenure as executive director of Community Health Services of Addison County’s Open Door Clinic.

Dabbs took the helm of the fledgling free clinic in July of 2007, when its staff consisted of a part-time director, case manager and a handful of volunteer physicians, nurses and other health care professionals operating out of a small space at 812 Exchange St. in Middlebury.

Ferry may be floated near champlain bridge

ADDISON — Vermont and New York transportation officials said on Wednesday they are “encouraged” by the potential of establishing a temporary ferry crossing of Lake Champlain near the now-mothballed Crown Point Bridge, a move that would aid commuters and throw an economic lifeline to area businesses who depend on pass-by traffic.

Meanwhile, engineers continue to evaluate locations on both sides of the lake that could accommodate a temporary bridge, including a spot at the former ferry landing off Crown Point Road in Bridport.

Bristol woman turns 100

MIDDLEBURY — Wall Street pundits have been invoking the term “Great Depression” in conversations about the current state of the national and global economies.

Those pundits should talk to someone like Charlotte Forte, who turned 100 last month and actually lived through the greatest of financial meltdowns — as an adult — more than 70 years ago.

Charlotte was born on Oct. 22, 1909, the middle child to John and Ruby Gilmore of Bristol. Growing up in a farming community enhanced her knowledge of nutrition — something she cites as one of the keys to her longevity.

MVAA eyes new headquarters, dispatch service

MIDDLEBURY — Work has begun on a new Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association (MVAA) headquarters off South Street that will give the organization a more than five-fold increase in space and allow it to offer centralized dispatching for fire and emergency services throughout the county.

“We are definitely pleased we were finally able to get this started,” MVAA Executive Director Bill Edson said of the $2.4 million project, to be sited on a one-acre plot just north of Porter Medical Center.

“We will be opening a new building in our 40th year (in 2010).”

In Ripton, students learn lessons of less

RIPTON — Ensconced in a former farmhouse tucked away amid the tree-filled slopes of Ripton, one could already argue that attending classes at the North Branch School is akin to going back to nature.

But the more than two-dozen students and faculty at North Branch took that concept a step further last week, as part of their contribution to the more than 5,200 worldwide global warming action events that occurred on Oct. 24 through the efforts of 350.org.

Parent-Child Center seeks endowment

MIDDLEBURY — Leaders of the Parent-Child Center of Addison County are saluting the organization’s 30th birthday with a $2 million fund-raising campaign to perpetually extend services to needy clients.

The local Parent-Child Center is widely considered Vermont’s model organization for giving young parents the counseling and support services they need to become independent and productive citizens.
