MIDDLEBURY — State officials on Monday gave the green light to a private, New Jersey-based home-health services provider to operate in Vermont, a scenario that some state nonprofits believe could bring more competition in an industry already beset with tight margins.

At issue is a successful effort from Bayada Nurses Inc. of Moorestown, N.J., to buy Professional Nurses Service Inc. (PNS) of Vermont, which in 2005 became the first private firm to be given state permission to compete against nonprofits for clients in the home health services industry.

MIDDLEBURY — Citing reduced orders for its bristle products and growing competition, Monahan Filaments executives confirmed on Wednesday they will close the company’s Middlebury plant on Nov. 15, thereby ending employment for 69 full-time workers.

“We don’t have the business to support the facility,” said Brian Crawford, vice president and general manager of Monahan Filaments, which in 2007 bought the former Specialty Filaments business out of U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

ADDISON — Lee and Pat Kayhart have each slung a bucket or two during their 40 years of dairying at their farm in West Addison.

Now the couple is poised to retire, selling their business interests to their sons — but they are not done with buckets. Lee Kayhart has started crossing off items on his “bucket list,” an ambitious series of accomplishments he’d like to cross off before he is no longer able. Kayhart, 61, and a couple of his buddies recently crossed off a big one, in the form of a parachute jump not five miles from the Kayharts’ farm.

MIDDLEBURY — Until recently, you had to travel down Cross Street or Bakery Lane to get visual confirmation of work on Middlebury’s new in-town bridge project.

But travelers along College Street last month received a rather abrupt signal that big changes are afoot. Seemingly overnight, five large, mature trees that bordered College Street in front of the Middlebury municipal building had suddenly disappeared.

Town eyes stimulus aid for $1.8 million sewer project

Posted on September 7, 2009 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters may be headed to the polls as soon as this November to authorize $1.8 million in improvements to the town’s main wastewater pumping station off Seymour Street.

The upgrades in question involve increasing the pumping station’s wet-well capacity and improving the facility’s grit-removal system. The current wet well is becoming overwhelmed during certain wet weather conditions, prompting it to overflow on occasion. That overflow has found its way into the Otter Creek, thereby triggering the state mandate to have the problem fixed.

MONTPELIER — In the wake of Thursday’s announcement by Gov. Jim Douglas that he would not seek re-election, speculation has focused on the mix of candidates likely to compete for the gubernatorial post.

Longtime Vermont political observer Eric Davis, Middlebury College professor emeritus of political science, said Douglas’s announcement was clearly timed “to give other candidates time to organize campaigns. The Democrats are out there already.”
