WEYBRIDGE — Nothing like spending a sunny afternoon hiking up a mountain. The picnic lunch tastes even better with a panoramic view.

But how about driving four hours to get to the base of a mountain for a hike of more than 4,000 feet to the summit, wading through armpit-high snowdrifts while braving sub-zero temperatures and fierce winds with only a frozen hard-boiled egg to gnaw on for sustenance? How about facing that kind of challenge 115 times on mountains throughout the Northeast — and only during the winter?

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Replacing the Main Street and Merchants Row bridges at their existing clearance level of 18 feet, 8 inches would shave about $4 million off the project price tag and 11 weeks off its construction timetable compared to the current plan that would raise clearance to 21 feet, according to the lead engineer and Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) officials.

MIDDLEBURY — It was around a decade ago that Jeff Weaber began brewing a healthy, fermented beverage called kombucha at his family’s home in Salisbury. It caught on with his friends and neighbors, which inspired him to make a commercial venture out of the drink, made simply from tea, sugar, water, and a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast.

CareerCenter5459.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center officials are proposing an essentially level-service 2016-2017 budget of $3,521,263, representing a 0.71-percent increase in spending compared to this year.

The budget reflects a 1.75-percent increase in the tuition rate assessed to the three Addison County supervisory unions that send students to the career center for vocational and technical education. This means the tuition rate would grow by $210, to a total of $20,454, for each full-time equivalent student who attends the center next year.

MIDDLEBURY — If anyone would have good reason to complain about the impacts of the upcoming replacement of the two downtown Middlebury rail bridges, it’s the Rev. Susan McGarry of the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

McGarry’s church office is literally 15 feet away from the railroad tracks and perhaps another 30 from the deteriorating Merchants Row bridge that will soon be removed along with the span on Main Street.

“My desk shakes sometimes when the train goes by,” McGarry said on Monday.
